PCV Valve

Replace the PCV valve on the 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8L engine to restore proper crankcase ventilation and prevent oil consumption or rough idle issues.

• PCV valve grommet × 1 — Replace if damaged or hardened

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
3. Allow engine to cool to ambient temperature
4. Open hood and secure with prop rod

Procedure

1. 1

   Locate the PCV valve
   The PCV valve is mounted in a rubber grommet on the passenger side of the valve cover, near the center. It has a hose connecting it to the intake manifold. Identify the valve and trace the hose connection to familiarize yourself with the assembly.

   Disconnect the PCV hose
   Using needle-nose pliers or your fingers, squeeze the hose clamp on the intake manifold side and slide it back away from the connection point. Gently twist and pull the hose off the intake manifold nipple. If the hose is stuck, carefully work a flathead screwdriver between the hose and nipple to break the seal.

   Remove the PCV valve from valve cover
   Grasp the PCV valve body firmly and pull straight up with a twisting motion to extract it from the rubber grommet in the valve cover. The valve should pull free with moderate force. If extremely difficult, the grommet may be deteriorated and require replacement.

   Inspect the grommet
   Examine the rubber grommet remaining in the valve cover for cracks, hardening, or deformation. If the grommet appears damaged or loses its seal, carefully pry it out using a flathead screwdriver and replace it with a new one. Ensure the new grommet seats fully into the valve cover opening.

   Install new PCV valve
   Push the new PCV valve straight down into the grommet in the valve cover with a firm twisting motion until it seats completely. The valve should be secure and not easily pulled out by hand. Ensure the orientation allows the hose to connect without sharp bends.
   Torque spec

   PCV Valve8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

   Reconnect PCV hose
   Slide the hose clamp back onto the hose away from the end. Push the hose firmly onto the intake manifold nipple until it bottoms out, then slide the clamp into position over the connection point. Ensure the hose is routed without kinks or tight bends.

   Verify installation
   Tug gently on the PCV valve to confirm it is seated securely in the grommet. Check that the hose connection is tight and the clamp is properly positioned. Ensure no other hoses or wiring were disturbed during the procedure.

Reassembly

1. No disassembly was required for this procedure
2. Ensure all hose connections are secure and clamps properly positioned

Verification

• Start the engine and allow it to idle for 2-3 minutes
• Listen for any hissing or vacuum leaks around the PCV valve area
• With engine idling, pinch the PCV hose shut briefly - engine idle should change noticeably, confirming proper PCV function
• Check for oil leaks around the valve cover grommet area
• Verify smooth idle quality and no check engine light illumination after test drive
