Exhaust Tip

This procedure covers the replacement of the exhaust tip on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.5L I4 gas engine, typically a slip-on or clamp-type connection at the rear of the exhaust system.

Preparation

1. Ensure vehicle has been off for at least 2 hours to allow complete cooling of exhaust system
2. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
3. Chock the front wheels if working at rear of vehicle
4. Inspect the existing exhaust tip connection type (slip-on clamp or bolted flange)

Procedure

   Access the exhaust tip
   Position yourself at the rear passenger side of the vehicle where the exhaust tip exits. The exhaust tip is located on the driver's side rear of the vehicle. You may need to crouch or use a creeper to access the connection point clearly.

   Apply penetrating oil
   Spray penetrating oil on the clamp bolt or connection point between the exhaust tip and the muffler outlet pipe. Allow 5-10 minutes for penetration if the vehicle has significant mileage or visible corrosion.

   Remove the clamp or fasteners
   If clamp-type: Locate the band clamp securing the exhaust tip to the muffler outlet pipe. Use a 10mm socket to loosen the clamp bolt. Turn counterclockwise until the clamp is loose enough to slide. If bolted-type (less common): Remove the mounting bolts securing the tip to the muffler. Note the orientation of any alignment tabs or notches.

   Remove the old exhaust tip
   Slide the exhaust tip rearward and off the muffler outlet pipe. If stuck due to carbon buildup or corrosion, gently twist while pulling to break the seal. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry between surfaces if necessary, taking care not to damage the muffler outlet pipe.

   Clean the muffler outlet pipe
   Use a wire brush to clean carbon deposits, rust, and debris from the outer surface of the muffler outlet pipe where the new tip will mount. Ensure the surface is smooth and clean for proper seating of the new tip. Wipe clean with a rag.

   Install the new exhaust tip
   Slide the new exhaust tip onto the muffler outlet pipe, ensuring it seats fully onto the pipe. The tip should slide on at least 2-3 inches for proper support. Align the tip so it exits straight and centered in relation to the rear bumper cutout. Adjust angle and depth before tightening.

   Secure the exhaust tip
   If clamp-type: Position the clamp over the connection point and hand-tighten the bolt. Ensure the clamp is positioned over both the tip and the muffler pipe. Tighten the clamp bolt firmly with a 10mm socket, typically to 20-25 Nm (snug but not over-tightened to avoid crushing the pipe). If bolted-type: Install mounting bolts and tighten evenly to secure the tip to the muffler.

   Verify alignment and clearance
   Check that the exhaust tip is properly aligned and centered in the bumper cutout. Verify there is adequate clearance between the tip and the bumper (at least 10-15mm). Check that the tip does not contact any part of the rear fascia or hanger components. Adjust position if needed by loosening clamp, repositioning, and re-tightening.

Reassembly

1. Double-check that the clamp bolt is tight and the exhaust tip does not rotate or slide when moderate hand pressure is applied
2. Verify the tip alignment one final time before starting the vehicle

Verification

• Start the engine and allow it to idle. Listen for any exhaust leaks at the connection point between the tip and muffler pipe
• Check for unusual vibration or rattling from the exhaust tip area
• Visually inspect the tip alignment from behind the vehicle to ensure it remains centered in the bumper cutout
• After a short test drive, re-check the clamp tightness as thermal cycling may cause slight settling
