Parts

  • Backup camera assembly × 1 — Toyota OEM 86790-42080 or equivalent
  • Trim panel retaining clips (if damaged) × 5 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Ensure the liftgate is fully open and supported
  2. Clean the area around the camera to prevent dirt from entering the liftgate during service
  3. If replacing due to image quality issues, test the display screen with known good input to verify the camera is the problem, not the display
  4. Have replacement trim clips available as original clips may break during removal

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove liftgate lower trim panel
Using a trim removal tool, carefully pry the lower liftgate trim panel starting from the bottom corners. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing the retaining clips. There are approximately 10-12 clips holding this panel. Once clips are released, lift the panel upward to disengage the upper tabs and remove it from the liftgate.
  2. 2
    Access backup camera mounting area
Locate the backup camera assembly mounted in the liftgate handle area. You will see the camera lens visible from the exterior and the mounting bracket and connector accessible from the interior. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
  3. 3
    Disconnect camera electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector behind the camera assembly. Press the locking tab and carefully pull the connector straight back to disconnect it from the camera. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If the connector is difficult to remove, gently wiggle it side to side while pulling.
  4. 4
    Remove camera mounting hardware
Remove the two 10mm mounting bolts securing the camera bracket to the liftgate. These bolts are typically located on either side of the camera assembly. Support the camera with one hand while removing the second bolt to prevent it from falling.

  5. 5
    Extract camera assembly
Carefully pull the camera assembly rearward (toward the exterior of the vehicle) to remove it from the liftgate. The camera may have a rubber grommet or seal that fits into the liftgate sheet metal. Gently work this free, being careful not to damage the seal if reusing it.
  6. 6
    Prepare new camera assembly
Inspect the new camera for any protective film on the lens and remove it if present. Transfer the rubber grommet/seal from the old camera to the new one if it is not included with the replacement part. Ensure the seal is properly seated in the camera housing groove.
  7. 7
    Install new camera assembly
Insert the new camera assembly into the liftgate opening from the interior side, pushing it through until the mounting bracket is flush against the liftgate inner panel. Ensure the rubber seal seats properly in the body opening to prevent water intrusion. Align the mounting holes with the threaded inserts in the liftgate.
  8. 8
    Secure camera with mounting bolts
Install the two 10mm mounting bolts and tighten them evenly to the specified torque. Tighten in a cross pattern to ensure even pressure on the camera bracket. Verify the camera is firmly seated and does not move when gently pulled.

  9. 9
    Connect electrical connector
Reconnect the electrical connector to the camera, ensuring it clicks fully into place. The connector should seat completely with no gap visible. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked.
  10. 10
    Reinstall liftgate trim panel
Position the trim panel and engage the upper tabs first by hooking them into their slots. Press firmly around the perimeter of the panel to seat all retaining clips. You should hear audible clicks as each clip engages. Verify the panel is flush and secure all around.

Reassembly

  1. Double-check that all trim panel clips are fully seated and the panel is flush with surrounding surfaces
  2. Verify no tools or parts were left in the liftgate cavity before closing
  3. Clean the camera lens with a microfiber cloth before testing

Verification

  • Turn the ignition to ON position and shift transmission to REVERSE to activate the backup camera display
  • Verify the camera image appears on the center display screen with proper orientation and no distortion
  • Check that the guide lines appear correctly on the display (if equipped)
  • Verify the image is clear without spots, lines, or discoloration
  • Test in different lighting conditions if possible to ensure proper exposure adjustment
  • If using an aftermarket camera, you may need to access the vehicle settings menu to calibrate the camera angle and guide lines, or visit a Toyota dealer for professional calibration if the system does not function properly
  • Inspect the camera area from the exterior to ensure the seal is properly seated and no gaps are visible that could allow water intrusion
