This procedure replaces the dimmer switch assembly (combination switch) on the steering column, which controls headlight high/low beam operation and turn signals.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will reset radio presets, clock, and memory settings. Have the radio security code available if applicable.
⚠The airbag system remains energized for up to 90 seconds after battery disconnect. Wait the full time before working on the steering column.
ℹ️Keep the steering wheel straight during this procedure to avoid issues with the spiral cable (clockspring) alignment.

Parts
- Dimmer/Combination Switch Assembly × 1 — 84140-0R020 or equivalent OEM
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key fob from vehicle
- Ensure front wheels are pointed straight ahead
- Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning
- Have the radio security code available if your vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft radio
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalOpen the hood and locate the 12V battery. Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative terminal bolt and remove the negative cable. Secure the cable away from the battery post to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait a minimum of 90 seconds for airbag system capacitors to fully discharge.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove lower steering column coversLocate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the two Phillips screws at the bottom of the lower cover. Gently pull the lower cover away from the column, disengaging the retaining clips. Set the lower cover aside. The upper cover may remain in place or come off with the lower cover depending on clip engagement.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 3Remove upper steering column coverIf the upper cover is still attached, remove the screws securing it to the column (typically two Phillips screws at the top). Carefully lift the upper cover up and away from the steering column, being mindful of any wiring that may be routed near the cover. Set aside with the lower cover.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect combination switch connectorsLocate the electrical connectors for the combination switch on the left side of the steering column. There are typically two large multi-pin connectors. Press the locking tabs on each connector while pulling firmly to disconnect. Note the routing and position of the wiring harness for reassembly.⚠Do not force connectors. Ensure locking tabs are fully depressed before pulling to avoid breaking connector housings.
- 5Remove combination switch mounting screwsUsing a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws securing the combination switch assembly to the steering column. These screws are typically located on the left side of the column bracket. Keep the screws in a safe location for reinstallation.
- 6Remove combination switch assemblyCarefully slide the combination switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may need to be angled slightly to clear the column shaft and any surrounding brackets. Guide the wiring harness through as you remove the assembly. Inspect the mounting area for any debris or damage.
- 7Inspect spiral cable alignmentWith the switch removed, verify that the spiral cable (clockspring) behind the steering wheel has not rotated. The alignment marks should be visible and properly aligned. If the vehicle was towed or the steering was turned with the switch removed, the spiral cable may need realignment per manufacturer procedure.⚠An misaligned spiral cable can cause airbag malfunction or premature failure. If alignment is questionable, perform spiral cable centering procedure before continuing.
- 8Install new combination switch assemblyRoute the wiring harness for the new combination switch through the column area. Align the new switch assembly with the mounting holes on the steering column. Slide the switch onto the column shaft, ensuring it seats fully against the mounting bracket. The switch should fit snugly without forcing.
- 9Install mounting screwsInsert and hand-tighten both mounting screws for the combination switch. Once both screws are started, tighten them evenly using a Phillips screwdriver. Do not overtighten as this can crack the switch housing. Verify the switch has no play or movement after tightening.
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect both electrical connectors to the combination switch, ensuring each connector clicks firmly into place. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated and locked. Route the wiring harness in its original position, ensuring no wires are pinched or stressed.
- 11Reinstall steering column coversPosition the upper steering column cover over the column, aligning any clips and screw holes. Install the upper cover screws and tighten to specification. Position the lower cover, engaging all retaining clips, then install the lower cover screws and tighten to specification. Verify both covers fit flush with no gaps.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect battery negative terminalReturn to the engine bay and reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative terminal. Tighten the terminal bolt to the specified torque of 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft) using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery terminal.⚠Overtightening battery terminals can crack the battery case or strip the terminal threads.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Double-check that all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify steering column covers are properly aligned with no rattles
- Ensure no tools or parts were left in the steering column area
- Reset the clock and radio presets as needed
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify instrument cluster illuminates without warning lights related to the combination switch
- Test turn signal operation in both left and right directions, confirming proper flashing and cancellation
- Test headlight dimmer function by toggling between high and low beams, verifying proper operation and indicator lights
- Verify wiper and washer controls operate correctly if integrated into the combination switch
- Check that all steering column covers are secure with no rattles when turning the steering wheel
- Start the engine and retest all functions under running conditions
- If airbag warning light remains illuminated, scan for diagnostic trouble codes and address any spiral cable alignment issues
