This procedure covers the replacement of a single headlight bulb (low beam or high beam) on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

Allow headlights to cool for at least 10 minutes before working to avoid burns from hot bulbs
Never touch the glass portion of a halogen bulb with bare fingers as skin oils will cause premature failure
ℹ️Turn off headlights and ignition before beginning work

Tools required

Flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool
Clean cloth or glovesEssential
Torque wrench (5-15 Nm range)

Parts

  • H11 headlight bulb (low beam) or 9005 headlight bulb (high beam) × 1 — Use OEM specification or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Turn off ignition and headlights completely
  2. Allow headlight assembly to cool if recently used
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Identify which bulb needs replacement (low beam is inboard position, high beam is outboard position)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access headlight bulb compartment
Locate the dust cover on the rear of the headlight assembly in the engine bay. The low beam cover is larger and positioned toward the center of the vehicle, while the high beam cover is smaller and positioned toward the fender. Grasp the dust cover and rotate it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn to unlock it, then pull it straight back to remove.
  2. 2
    Disconnect bulb electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector attached to the back of the bulb. Press the release tab on the connector and pull straight back to disconnect it from the bulb socket. Do not pull on the wiring harness itself.
  3. 3
    Remove bulb retaining ring
The bulb is secured by a wire retaining ring that clips into the headlight housing. Press the retaining ring inward slightly toward the headlight housing and rotate counterclockwise to release it from the locked position. Carefully remove the retaining ring and set aside.
  4. 4
    Remove old bulb
Carefully pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing. Avoid touching the reflector surface inside the housing. Inspect the bulb socket for any corrosion or damage.
  5. 5
    Install new bulb
Using a clean cloth or wearing clean gloves, handle the new bulb only by its plastic base. Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlight housing and insert the bulb straight in until it is fully seated. Ensure the bulb sits flush against the housing.
Do not touch the glass envelope of the new bulb with bare skin
  6. 6
    Secure bulb with retaining ring
Position the wire retaining ring over the bulb base and align it with the locking slots. Press the ring inward and rotate clockwise until it clicks into the locked position. Verify the ring is fully engaged and the bulb cannot move.

    Bulb Retaining Ring5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the bulb terminals until it clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked securely.
  8. 8
    Reinstall dust cover
Align the dust cover with the opening on the rear of the headlight housing. Push it in firmly and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Ensure the seal is properly seated to prevent moisture intrusion.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure dust cover is fully seated and locked to maintain weatherproof seal
  2. Close hood securely

Verification

  • Start the vehicle and turn on the headlights to verify the new bulb illuminates properly
  • Test both low beam and high beam functions if applicable
  • Check for proper beam pattern and ensure no flickering occurs
  • Visually inspect the headlight housing from outside the vehicle to confirm proper operation
