Replace both low beam headlight bulbs on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with 2.5L I4 engine. This procedure involves accessing the bulb assemblies from the engine bay without removing the headlight housing.

Warnings

Allow headlights to cool for at least 10 minutes if recently used to prevent burns
Never touch the glass portion of halogen bulbs with bare skin as oils can cause premature failure. Use clean gloves or hold by the base only
ℹ️This procedure is for low beam bulbs only. High beam and other bulb types have different access procedures

Tools required

Microfiber cloth or clean glovesEssential
Flashlight or work light

Parts

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11 type) × 2 — H11 halogen bulb or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
  2. Allow headlights to cool completely if recently used
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Verify correct replacement bulb type (H11 for low beam)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access driver side headlight bulb
Locate the driver side headlight assembly at the front of the engine bay. Identify the low beam bulb access cover on the back of the headlight housing. This is a round dust cover approximately 4 inches in diameter.
  2. 2
    Remove driver side dust cover
Rotate the dust cover counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn to unlock it. Pull the cover straight back to remove it from the headlight housing. Set aside in a clean location.
  3. 3
    Disconnect driver side bulb connector
Locate the electrical connector attached to the back of the bulb. Press the release tab on the connector and pull straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on the wiring, only the connector body.
  4. 4
    Remove driver side bulb
The bulb is secured by a wire retaining clip. Press the clip toward the bulb base and rotate it slightly to release tension, then swing the clip out of the way. Carefully pull the bulb straight out of the housing. Avoid touching the reflector inside the housing.
  5. 5
    Install new driver side bulb
Remove the new bulb from packaging using clean gloves or a microfiber cloth, holding only the base. Insert the bulb into the socket, ensuring the tabs on the bulb base align with the slots in the housing. Push firmly until fully seated. Swing the wire retaining clip back into position and ensure it locks the bulb securely in place.
  6. 6
    Reconnect driver side electrical connector
Push the electrical connector onto the bulb terminals until it clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector body.
  7. 7
    Reinstall driver side dust cover
Align the tabs on the dust cover with the slots on the headlight housing. Press the cover into place and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks. Ensure the cover is fully seated to maintain weather seal.
  8. 8
    Access passenger side headlight bulb
Move to the passenger side of the engine bay. Locate the passenger side headlight assembly. The low beam bulb access cover is in the same relative position as the driver side. Note: Access may be slightly tighter due to engine bay components.
  9. 9
Remove and replace passenger side bulb
Repeat steps 2-7 for the passenger side headlight bulb. Rotate and remove the dust cover counterclockwise, disconnect the electrical connector, release the wire retaining clip, remove the old bulb, install the new bulb with clean gloves, secure the retaining clip, reconnect the electrical connector, and reinstall the dust cover by rotating clockwise.

Reassembly

  1. Verify both dust covers are fully seated and locked in place
  2. Ensure all electrical connectors are securely attached
  3. Dispose of old bulbs properly according to local regulations

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
  • Turn on headlights and verify both low beams illuminate properly
  • Check for even brightness between both sides
  • Turn headlights off and close hood
  • Test headlights while driving to ensure proper operation and aim
