Parts
- Headlight switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key or fob from vehicle
- Ensure steering wheel is in straight-ahead position
- Gather all tools and new headlight switch assembly
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalOpen hood and locate the 12V battery. Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative terminal bolt and remove the negative cable from the battery post. Secure the cable away from the battery terminal to prevent accidental reconnection.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Wait for airbag system dischargeWait at least 90 seconds to allow the airbag system backup power supply to fully discharge before proceeding with any work on the instrument panel area.
- 3Remove lower dash panelLocate the lower dash panel beneath the steering column. Remove the Phillips screws securing the panel (typically 3-4 screws). Gently pull the lower panel away from the dash to disengage any retaining clips. Disconnect any electrical connectors for panel lighting if equipped, then set the panel aside.
- 4Remove knee airbag panelThe knee airbag panel is located above the lower dash panel. Remove the mounting bolts using a 10mm socket. Carefully disconnect the yellow airbag connector by releasing the locking tab. Set the knee airbag panel aside in a safe location with the airbag facing upward.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 5Access headlight switch areaWith the knee airbag removed, you now have access to the back of the instrument cluster trim panel. Use a flashlight to identify the headlight switch mounting location and electrical connector routing.
- 6Remove instrument cluster trim bezelUsing plastic trim tools, carefully pry the instrument cluster trim bezel away from the dash starting at the bottom corners. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing all retaining clips. Once loose, pull the bezel forward enough to access the back of the headlight switch.
- 7Disconnect headlight switch connectorLocate the electrical connector on the back of the headlight switch. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight back to disconnect it from the switch. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reassembly.
- 8Remove headlight switchIdentify the switch mounting tabs or screws securing the headlight switch to the trim bezel. Depending on design, either press the release tabs and push the switch out from the front, or remove any small mounting screws. Remove the old headlight switch from the trim bezel.
- 9Install new headlight switchInsert the new headlight switch into the trim bezel opening. Ensure the switch is properly oriented with the control knob or buttons facing the correct direction. Press firmly or install mounting screws until the switch is securely seated and flush with the bezel surface.
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorConnect the electrical connector to the back of the new headlight switch. Push firmly until you hear and feel a positive click, confirming the locking tab is engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.
- 11Reinstall instrument cluster trim bezelPosition the trim bezel back onto the instrument panel. Align all mounting points and press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Ensure the bezel is flush and uniformly seated around the entire perimeter.
- 12Reinstall knee airbag panelReconnect the yellow airbag connector, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Position the knee airbag panel and install the mounting bolts finger-tight first, then torque to specification using a 10mm socket and torque wrench.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 13Reinstall lower dash panelIf equipped, reconnect any electrical connectors for panel lighting. Position the lower dash panel and engage any retaining clips. Install the Phillips screws and tighten securely, being careful not to over-tighten plastic components.
- 14Reconnect batteryReturn to the battery and reconnect the negative terminal. Position the cable on the battery post and tighten the terminal bolt to specification using a 10mm socket and torque wrench. Do not overtighten.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels are properly seated and all fasteners are tightened
- Check that no tools or parts were left in the dash area
- Reset the clock and radio presets as needed
Verification
- Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine
- Test all headlight switch functions: parking lights, headlights, high beams, and auto mode if equipped
- Verify the instrument panel dimmer function works properly if integrated with the headlight switch
- Check that the headlight switch operates smoothly with positive detents in each position
- Verify no airbag warning lights remain illuminated on the instrument cluster after starting the engine
- Confirm all removed trim panels are secure with no rattles or gaps
