This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor on the 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

Allow engine to cool completely before working near the intake manifold to prevent burns.
ℹ️The MAP sensor is delicate; do not drop or expose to impact damage.
ℹ️Keep the sensor opening clean and free from debris during installation.

Tools required

10mm socket and ratchetEssential
Torque wrench (1-10 Nm range)Essential
Electrical connector release tool or small flathead screwdriver
Shop towels
Compressed air or electronics cleaner

Parts

  • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • MAP sensor O-ring or gasket (if separate) × 1 — Check if included with sensor

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes
  3. Remove the engine cover if equipped by pulling upward on the cover clips
  4. Locate the MAP sensor on the intake manifold (typically mounted on the upper intake plenum near the throttle body)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the MAP sensor
Identify the MAP sensor location on the intake manifold. It is a small sensor with a single electrical connector and typically one or two mounting screws. Clear any nearby hoses or harnesses that may obstruct access.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the MAP sensor electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight off the sensor. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If the connector is tight, use a small flathead screwdriver to assist with releasing the lock tab.
  3. 3
    Remove MAP sensor mounting hardware
Using a 10mm socket, carefully remove the mounting screw(s) securing the MAP sensor to the intake manifold. Keep track of any washers or spacers. The sensor may have one or two screws depending on the specific mounting configuration.
    Torque spec
    MAP Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove MAP sensor from manifold
Gently pull the MAP sensor straight out of the intake manifold. There may be a slight vacuum seal to overcome. If equipped with an O-ring, note its position. Cover the opening in the intake manifold with a clean shop towel to prevent debris from entering.
  5. 5
    Clean mounting surface
Remove the shop towel temporarily and inspect the sensor mounting hole. Use compressed air or electronics cleaner to remove any dust or debris from the mounting surface and sensor port. Do not allow any foreign material to enter the intake manifold. Replace the shop towel when finished.
  6. 6
    Prepare new MAP sensor
Remove the new MAP sensor from its packaging. If the sensor uses a separate O-ring or gasket, install it on the new sensor according to the orientation of the old sensor. Ensure the O-ring is properly seated in its groove.
  7. 7
    Install new MAP sensor
Remove the shop towel from the intake manifold opening. Align the new MAP sensor with the mounting hole and carefully insert it straight into the manifold, ensuring the O-ring seats properly. Do not force or cross-thread the sensor.
  8. 8
    Install mounting hardware
Install the MAP sensor mounting screw(s) and any washers. Hand-tighten initially, then torque to specification using a torque wrench. Be careful not to overtighten as the sensor body may be plastic or the threads may strip.
    Torque spec
    MAP Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the new MAP sensor until you hear or feel a distinct click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely locked in place.
  10. 10
    Reinstall engine cover
If removed, reinstall the engine cover by aligning the mounting clips and pressing down firmly until all clips engage. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify no tools or shop towels were left in the engine bay
  3. Double-check that the MAP sensor mounting screws are torqued to specification

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify it idles smoothly without rough running or stalling
  • Check for diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner; clear any codes present before the repair
  • Allow the engine to reach operating temperature and verify no new codes appear
  • Test drive the vehicle to confirm normal acceleration and throttle response
  • Verify the MAP sensor reading using a scan tool (typical reading at idle is 20-30 kPa depending on altitude)
