This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the side mirror assembly on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4, including disconnecting the electrical connector and removing the mounting hardware.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may trigger security systems. Have the radio security code available if applicable.
⚠The mirror assembly is bulky and can fall during removal. Support the mirror from outside the vehicle while removing mounting nuts.
ℹ️If replacing a heated/power-folding mirror, ensure the replacement has identical features and connector types.

Parts
- Side mirror assembly (specify left or right) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Mirror mounting nuts (if corroded) × 3 — 90179-08051 or equivalent
- Door trim clips (if damaged during removal) × 2 — 90467-07201 or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning work
- Open the door fully to access the interior trim panel and mirror mounting area
- Roll down the window slightly to prevent accidental door lock engagement
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
Procedure
- 1Remove door trim panel upper cornerUsing a trim panel removal tool, carefully pry the upper corner triangular trim panel away from the door frame. This panel covers the mirror mounting nuts and electrical connector. Start at the rear edge and work forward, releasing the retaining clips. Be gentle to avoid breaking the clips.
- 2Disconnect mirror electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector behind the trim panel. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out from the mirror harness. If equipped with multiple connectors (heated, power-folding, blind spot), disconnect all connectors. Note the routing of the wire harness for reinstallation.
- 3Support mirror assembly from outsideHave an assistant hold the mirror assembly from the outside of the vehicle, or use painter's tape to temporarily secure it to the door. The mirror will become loose once the mounting nuts are removed and could fall and damage the door or mirror.⚠Do not allow the mirror to hang by the wiring harness as this can damage the conductors and connectors.
- 4Remove mirror mounting nutsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the three mounting nuts securing the mirror base to the door frame. These nuts are located in a triangular pattern. Keep the nuts and washers together for reinstallation. The mirror assembly can now be removed from the outside of the vehicle.
- 5Remove mirror assemblyFrom the outside of the vehicle, carefully pull the mirror assembly away from the door. Feed the electrical connector and wiring harness through the mounting hole in the door frame. Inspect the mounting studs on the new mirror for any damage or thread issues before installation.
- 6Install new mirror assemblyFeed the wiring harness and electrical connector(s) through the door frame mounting hole from the outside. Align the three mounting studs with the holes in the door frame. Ensure the mirror base gasket is properly seated against the door surface to prevent water intrusion.
- 7Install and torque mounting nutsFrom inside the door, thread the three mounting nuts onto the studs by hand. Tighten in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Using a torque wrench, tighten the nuts to 8.0 Nm (6.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this can crack the mirror base or distort the mounting surface.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect electrical connector(s)Connect the mirror electrical connector(s) until you hear and feel a positive click. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated. Ensure the wiring harness is routed properly and will not be pinched by the trim panel during reinstallation.
- 9Reinstall door trim panelPosition the triangular trim panel over the mirror mounting area. Align all retaining clips with their corresponding holes in the door frame. Press firmly around the perimeter until all clips are fully seated and the panel is flush with the door surface.
- 10Reconnect battery and test mirror functionsReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft). Turn the ignition to ON position (engine does not need to run). Test all mirror functions including power adjustment in all directions, heating element (if equipped), power folding (if equipped), and blind spot indicator lights (if equipped).Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before testing
- Verify the mirror base gasket is properly seated to prevent wind noise and water intrusion
- Check that the trim panel is flush and all clips are fully engaged
- Reset power windows and other systems if necessary after battery reconnection
Verification
- Test power mirror adjustment in all directions (up, down, left, right) using the door-mounted controls
- If equipped, verify heated mirror function activates with rear defrost button
- If equipped, test power-folding function using the fold button
- Check for proper mirror positioning and verify no vibration or looseness at highway speeds during test drive
- Verify blind spot monitoring indicators illuminate properly if equipped
- Inspect for any gaps between mirror base and door that could cause wind noise or water leaks
