This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a relay in the engine bay or interior fuse/relay box on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

Ensure the correct relay is identified before removal. Removing the wrong relay can cause electrical issues or leave vehicle inoperable.
Some relays control critical systems. Consult wiring diagram or owner's manual to verify relay function before proceeding.
ℹ️The RAV4 has multiple relay locations: engine compartment fuse box (driver side), and interior fuse box (driver side dash end panel).

Tools required

10mm socket and ratchetEssential
Needle-nose pliers
Relay puller tool
Flashlight
Multimeter

Parts

  • Replacement relay × 1 — Match amperage and terminal configuration to original relay

Preparation

  1. Identify the specific relay to be replaced using the fuse box diagram (located on cover or in owner's manual)
  2. Note the relay location, number, and amperage rating
  3. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  4. If working in engine bay, ensure engine is cool to the touch
  5. Verify replacement relay matches original in amperage, size, and terminal configuration

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the terminal to prevent accidental reconnection during relay replacement.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Access the relay box
For engine compartment: Release the clips or tabs securing the fuse/relay box cover and remove it. For interior location: Open the driver's door and remove the end panel cover on the dashboard by gently pulling it away from the dash. Set covers aside in a clean location.
  3. 3
    Locate the target relay
Using the diagram on the fuse box cover or in the owner's manual, identify the exact relay to be replaced. Verify the relay number and function match your diagnosis. Note the orientation of the relay before removal.
  4. 4
    Remove the faulty relay
Grasp the relay firmly and pull straight up with steady pressure to remove it from its socket. If the relay is difficult to grip, use needle-nose pliers or a relay puller tool. Avoid rocking the relay side-to-side as this can damage the socket terminals.
  5. 5
    Inspect the relay socket
Examine the relay socket for corrosion, debris, or damaged terminals. If corrosion is present, clean terminals with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry. Check for any signs of melting or heat damage that would indicate a deeper electrical issue requiring further diagnosis.
If socket shows heat damage or melted plastic, do not install new relay. Investigate root cause of excessive current draw before proceeding.
  6. 6
    Install the new relay
Verify the new relay matches the original in all specifications (amperage, terminal count, and physical size). Align the relay terminals with the socket, ensuring correct orientation. Press the relay firmly into the socket until it seats completely and sits flush with surrounding relays.
  7. 7
    Reinstall relay box cover
Position the relay box cover and ensure all clips or tabs align properly. Press firmly until all clips snap into place. Verify the cover is fully secured and seated correctly.
  8. 8
    Reconnect battery negative terminal
Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post. Thread the terminal bolt and tighten to specification using a 10mm socket. Ensure the connection is secure but do not overtighten.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all fuse box covers are properly secured with clips engaged
  2. If interior panel was removed, ensure it is fully seated and flush with dashboard
  3. Check that battery terminals are clean and tight

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine and verify no new warning lights appear on instrument cluster
  • Test the function controlled by the replaced relay (headlights, fuel pump, cooling fan, etc.) to confirm proper operation
  • Start the engine and verify normal operation of all electrical systems
  • If available, use a scan tool to check for any newly stored diagnostic trouble codes
  • Listen for proper relay clicking sound during system activation if applicable
