- Plastic cable clips/retainers × 3 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Toyota WS ATF — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
- Remove front driver side wheel for improved access
- Remove engine splash shield if equipped
Procedure
- 1Remove center console componentsRemove the front cup holder assembly by releasing clips. Remove all visible screws securing the center console trim. Carefully pry up the shifter trim panel starting from the rear and working forward. Disconnect any electrical connectors for heated seats or USB ports as needed.
- 2Access shifter assemblyWith trim removed, locate the shift cable attachment point at the base of the shifter assembly. Remove the shift position indicator cover if present. Note the cable routing and any clips securing the cable to the floor pan.
- 3Disconnect cable at shifterUse a flat blade screwdriver to pry the cable end bushing off the shifter lever ball stud. Rotate the cable housing 90 degrees and pull upward to release it from the shifter bracket. Remove the cable bracket bolts securing the cable housing to the shifter assembly.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 4Remove interior cable routing clipsWorking from the shifter toward the firewall, release all cable routing clips and retainers securing the cable to the floor and tunnel. Note exact routing for reinstallation. Remove the cable grommet from the firewall by carefully pulling it through from the engine bay side.
- 5Locate transmission cable connectionFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the shift cable where it connects to the transmission shift lever on the driver side of the transmission. Clean the area around the connection point. Note the position of the adjustment nut and cable bracket.
- 6Disconnect cable at transmissionLoosen the adjustment nut on the cable housing at the transmission bracket. Remove the cable bracket mounting bolts from the transmission case. Use a flat blade screwdriver to pry the cable end bushing off the transmission shift lever ball stud. Support the cable to prevent it from falling.ℹ️Small amount of ATF may leak from cable opening in transmission; this is normalTorque specAdjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)Cable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 7Remove cable assemblyRelease any remaining cable clips along the routing path under the vehicle and through the engine bay. Carefully pull the cable through the firewall grommet opening from the engine bay side. Remove the complete cable assembly from the vehicle and inspect the grommet for damage.
- 8Prepare new cableCompare new cable assembly to old cable to verify correct part. Install new firewall grommet onto cable if not pre-installed. Apply light coating of ATF to cable end bushings for easier installation. Ensure cable is not kinked or twisted.
- 9Install cable at transmissionFrom underneath vehicle, route new cable to transmission location. Install cable bracket to transmission using mounting bolts and torque to specification. Snap cable end bushing onto transmission shift lever ball stud until it clicks. Thread adjustment nut onto cable housing but do not fully tighten yet.⚠Ensure cable end bushing is fully seated on ball stud; pull to verify engagementTorque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 10Route cable through vehiclePush cable through firewall grommet opening from engine bay side. Ensure grommet seats properly in firewall opening with no gaps. Route cable along original path through engine bay and under vehicle, installing all routing clips. Verify cable has adequate clearance from exhaust, suspension, and steering components.
- 11Connect cable at shifterFrom inside vehicle, pull cable through to shifter area. Install cable housing into shifter bracket and secure with cable bracket bolts torqued to specification. Snap cable end bushing onto shifter lever ball stud until it clicks fully into place. Verify connection by pulling on cable.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 12Adjust shift cableWith shifter in PARK position, verify transmission shift lever is in PARK detent (fully rearward). Adjust cable housing position at transmission bracket so there is no slack or tension in cable. Torque adjustment nut to specification while holding cable housing in position.Torque specAdjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 13Test shift operationReconnect negative battery terminal. Without starting engine, cycle shifter through all positions: P-R-N-D-L and back to P. Verify smooth engagement in each detent position. Check that transmission shift lever moves through full range at transmission. Verify park pawl engagement by attempting to push vehicle with shifter in PARK.
Reassembly
- Reinstall shifter trim panel and center console components in reverse order of removal
- Reconnect all electrical connectors for console accessories
- Reinstall engine splash shield if equipped
- Reinstall driver side front wheel and torque lug nuts to specification
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
- Check ATF level and top off if needed with Toyota WS ATF
Verification
- Start engine and verify it only starts in PARK and NEUTRAL positions
- With foot on brake, shift through all gear positions verifying smooth engagement and proper instrument cluster display
- Verify vehicle does not roll in PARK position on slight incline
- Test drive vehicle and confirm all forward and reverse gears engage properly
- Verify no abnormal noises or binding during shifting
- Confirm shifter returns to center position in all gear ranges
