Replace spark plugs on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with 2.5L I4 engine to maintain proper ignition and engine performance.

Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work to avoid burns from hot components
Do not over-torque spark plugs as this can damage the aluminum cylinder head threads
Keep dirt and debris out of spark plug wells to prevent contamination of combustion chamber

Parts

  • Spark plugs × 4 — 90919-01253 (Denso IK20TT) or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cold to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod if necessary
  4. Gather all tools and parts before beginning

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove engine cover
Remove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward firmly on the cover to release the retaining clips. The cover is held by push-type clips and does not require tools to remove on this model.
  2. 2
    Disconnect ignition coils
Locate all four ignition coils on top of the engine. Press down on the locking tab of each coil electrical connector and pull straight up to disconnect. Mark or remember the cylinder numbers if connectors appear different.
  3. 3
    Remove ignition coil bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing each ignition coil. There is one bolt per coil located at the top of each coil pack.

  4. 4
    Extract ignition coils
Carefully pull each ignition coil straight up and out of the spark plug well. If a coil is stuck, gently twist while pulling. Inspect the coil boots for damage or cracking and replace if necessary.
  5. 5
    Clean spark plug wells
Use compressed air or a vacuum to remove any dirt, debris, or oil from around the spark plugs and inside the plug wells. This prevents contamination from falling into the cylinders when plugs are removed.
If oil is present in the spark plug wells, valve cover gaskets may need replacement
  6. 6
    Remove old spark plugs
Using the spark plug socket with extension, carefully loosen each spark plug by turning counterclockwise. Once loose, unthread by hand to prevent cross-threading. Remove all four plugs and inspect for unusual wear, fouling, or deposits.
  7. 7
    Gap new spark plugs
Check the gap on each new spark plug using a spark plug gap tool. The gap should be 0.043 inches (1.1mm) for this engine. Adjust if necessary by gently bending the ground electrode. Do not attempt to close the gap by pressing on the center electrode.
ℹ️Some OEM plugs come pre-gapped, but always verify before installation

Apply anti-seize to spark plug threads
Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of each new spark plug. Use sparingly - only coat the threads, avoiding the electrode end. This prevents seizing in the aluminum cylinder head and ensures proper torque readings.

    Install new spark plugs
Carefully thread each spark plug into the cylinder head by hand, turning clockwise. Ensure the plug threads in smoothly without resistance. If resistance is felt, remove and restart to avoid cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use the torque wrench to tighten to specification.
Always start threading by hand to prevent cross-threading the aluminum head

    Reinstall ignition coils
Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the inside of each ignition coil boot if desired. Insert each coil back into its respective spark plug well, ensuring it seats fully onto the spark plug. Push down firmly until you feel the coil bottom out on the plug.
  11. 11
    Install ignition coil bolts
Install the 10mm bolt for each ignition coil and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Do not over-tighten as this can crack the coil housing.

  12. 12
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect the electrical connector to each ignition coil by pushing down firmly until you hear and feel a click. Verify each connector is fully seated and the locking tab is engaged.
  13. 13
    Reinstall engine cover
Align the engine cover over the engine and press down firmly on all clip locations until each clip snaps into place. Ensure the cover is seated evenly and securely.

Reassembly

  1. Double-check that all ignition coil electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify engine cover is properly installed and all clips are engaged
  3. Ensure no tools or parts are left in the engine compartment

Verification

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth, even idle with no misfires or rough running
  • Check for any warning lights on the dashboard, particularly the check engine light
  • Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify continued smooth operation
  • Perform a test drive to confirm normal acceleration and no hesitation under load
