This procedure covers the removal, mounting, balancing, and reinstallation of tires on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with 2.5L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠RAV4 is equipped with TPMS sensors in each wheel. Use extreme care during tire mounting to avoid damaging sensors mounted to valve stems or inside barrel of wheel.
⚠Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for vehicle weight.
ℹ️After tire mounting, TPMS system may require a reset procedure or driving cycle to relearn sensor positions.

Parts
- Tires (set of 4) × 4 — 225/65R17 or 235/55R19 depending on trim - Use OEM specification
- Valve stems (TPMS compatible) × 4 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Chock rear wheels if lifting front, or front wheels if lifting rear
- Loosen all wheel lug nuts approximately 1 turn before lifting vehicle
- Lift vehicle at manufacturer-specified jack points and support with jack stands at all four corners
- Remove all four wheels and place on clean work surface
Procedure
- 1Inspect wheels and TPMS sensorsVisually inspect each wheel for damage, cracks, or corrosion. Check TPMS sensor condition and valve stem integrity. Note sensor ID locations if visible for reference during reinstallation.
- 2Deflate and break tire beadsRemove valve core from each tire to fully deflate. Position wheel on tire changing machine and use bead breaker to separate both inner and outer tire beads from wheel rim. Work carefully around TPMS sensor location to avoid contact.
- 3Remove old tires from wheelsMount wheel on tire changer turntable and clamp securely. Use tire machine arm to lift top bead over rim edge, rotating wheel as needed. Remove bottom bead in same manner. Keep TPMS sensor protected during removal process.
- 4Clean wheel and inspect TPMSClean wheel rim bead seating surfaces thoroughly, removing all old tire residue, corrosion, and debris. Inspect TPMS sensor battery and mounting hardware. Replace valve stems if rubber shows cracking or deterioration.
- 5Mount new tires to wheelsApply tire mounting lubricant liberally to both tire beads and wheel rim edges. Position new tire on wheel with directional arrows pointing forward (if directional tread pattern). Use tire machine to lever bottom bead onto rim first, then top bead. Ensure TPMS sensor is positioned at appropriate clock position and is not pinched between tire bead and rim.
- 6Inflate and seat tire beadsInstall valve core and inflate tire to seat beads against rim flanges. You may hear audible pops as beads seat. Inflate to 40-45 PSI temporarily to ensure proper bead seating, then adjust to placard specification (typically 35 PSI front and rear for RAV4).
- 7Balance wheelsMount each wheel assembly on wheel balancer. Enter wheel dimensions and run spin cycle. Note imbalance measurements and apply wheel weights as indicated by balancer to achieve zero or near-zero imbalance on both static and dynamic planes. Verify balance with second spin cycle.
- 8Reinstall wheels to vehicleClean wheel mounting surfaces on hubs. Install wheels ensuring they sit flush against hub faces. Thread lug nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading. Torque lug nuts in star pattern to specification.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)
- 9Lower vehicle and perform final torqueRemove jack stands and lower vehicle to ground. With vehicle weight on wheels, perform final torque check of all lug nuts in star pattern to specification.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all lug nuts are torqued to specification in proper star pattern
- Set all tire pressures to placard specification (located on driver door jamb)
- Install center caps if equipped
Verification
- Check tire pressure in all four tires matches placard specification
- Verify TPMS warning light is not illuminated on instrument cluster (may require short drive or manual reset procedure)
- Test drive vehicle at low speed and verify no vibration or pulling
- Re-check lug nut torque after 50-100 miles of driving
