Parts
- Tail light assembly (driver or passenger side as needed) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Tail light gasket/seal (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
- Open rear liftgate for access to tail light assembly
- Allow tail lights to cool if vehicle was recently operated
- Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning
Procedure
- 1Access tail light assembly from cargo areaFrom inside the cargo area with the liftgate open, locate the interior trim panel directly behind the tail light assembly on the side being serviced. The panel is held by plastic clips and may have a small access cover.
- 2Remove interior trim panel or access coverCarefully pull back or remove the interior cargo area trim panel to expose the back of the tail light assembly. Some models have a small removable access cover instead of requiring full panel removal. Use trim removal tool if needed to avoid breaking clips.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the bulb socket connectors or main tail light harness connector at the back of the assembly. Press the release tab and pull each connector straight out from the socket. Note the position of each connector for reassembly.
- 4Remove tail light mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket and extension, remove the tail light mounting bolts (typically 2-3 bolts) accessible from inside the cargo area. Keep these bolts in a safe location as they will be reused.
- 5Remove tail light assembly from vehicleFrom outside the vehicle, gently pull the tail light assembly straight rearward away from the vehicle body. It may require slight wiggling to release from the mounting alignment pins. Be careful not to drop the assembly as you pull it free.
- 6Inspect mounting area and gasketClean the mounting surface on the vehicle body with a shop towel. Inspect the tail light gasket/seal for damage, cracks, or deterioration. Replace gasket if compromised to prevent water intrusion.
- 7Prepare new tail light assemblyIf installing a new assembly, transfer any bulb sockets from the old assembly if not included with the replacement. Ensure the gasket is properly seated in the groove around the new assembly perimeter.
- 8Install tail light assemblyAlign the tail light assembly with the mounting holes and alignment pins on the vehicle body. Push the assembly firmly into place ensuring it sits flush against the body panel with even gaps all around.
- 9Install and torque mounting boltsFrom inside the cargo area, thread in the tail light mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment. Using a torque wrench and 10mm socket, tighten the bolts to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Do not overtighten.Torque specTail Light Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorsPush each electrical connector firmly into its corresponding socket until you hear or feel a positive click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is secure.
- 11Reinstall interior trim panelReplace the interior cargo area trim panel or access cover, ensuring all clips are properly aligned and seated. Press firmly around all clip locations until you hear them snap into place.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Ensure tail light assembly sits flush with body panel with consistent gap spacing
- Confirm interior trim panel is securely fastened with all clips engaged
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to run)
- Test all tail light functions: running lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights
- Have an assistant verify all lights are functioning while you operate controls from driver seat
- Inspect exterior seal for proper seating with no gaps that could allow water intrusion
- Verify no warning lights appear on instrument cluster
