Replace the tail light bulb assembly on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 by accessing the bulb holder from inside the rear cargo area.

Warnings

Allow bulbs to cool completely before handling if vehicle was recently operated
ℹ️Avoid touching new halogen bulb glass with bare fingers as skin oils can cause premature failure

Tools required

Phillips head screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver or trim panel tool
Clean cloth or gloves

Parts

  • Tail light bulb (7443 or 7440 depending on position) × 1 — Use OEM specification or verify bulb type before purchasing

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
  2. Identify which specific tail light bulb has failed (brake, turn signal, reverse, or tail light)
  3. Open rear liftgate to access interior cargo area
  4. Purchase correct replacement bulb for the specific position being serviced

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the tail light assembly
From inside the rear cargo area, locate the fabric or carpeted interior panel covering the tail light assembly on the affected side. This panel is on the rear quarter trim behind the tail light.
  2. 2
    Remove interior trim panel clips
Gently pull back or peel away the cargo area trim panel to expose the tail light assembly backing. Some models have small clips or fasteners that need to be carefully released. Use a trim tool if necessary to avoid damage.
  3. 3
    Locate the bulb socket
Identify the specific bulb socket that corresponds to the failed bulb. The tail light assembly has multiple sockets for different functions: brake light, turn signal, reverse light, and tail light. Each socket is labeled or positioned differently.
  4. 4
    Remove the bulb socket
Grasp the bulb socket firmly and rotate counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (90 degrees) until it releases from the tail light housing. Pull the socket straight out from the housing.
  5. 5
    Remove the old bulb
With the socket removed, press the bulb gently into the socket while rotating counterclockwise to release it from the bayonet-style mount. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket. If the bulb is wedge-type, simply pull it straight out.
  6. 6
    Install the new bulb
Using a clean cloth or gloves to avoid touching the glass, insert the new bulb into the socket. For bayonet-style bulbs, press in and rotate clockwise until it locks. For wedge bulbs, push straight in until fully seated. Ensure the bulb is secure and properly oriented.
  7. 7
    Reinstall the bulb socket
Insert the bulb socket back into the tail light housing, aligning the tabs properly. Rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until the socket locks into place and is secure.
  8. 8
    Test the new bulb
Before reassembling trim panels, turn on the vehicle ignition and test the new bulb function. Have an assistant press the brake pedal, activate turn signals, or shift into reverse as needed to verify the correct bulb is working.
  9. 9
    Reinstall interior trim panel
Once bulb operation is confirmed, reposition the cargo area trim panel over the tail light assembly. Press firmly to re-engage any clips or fasteners. Ensure the panel is flush and secure.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all bulb sockets are fully locked into position with a clockwise rotation
  2. Verify interior trim panel is properly secured with all clips engaged
  3. Close the rear liftgate

Verification

  • Turn on headlights to verify tail light function
  • Press brake pedal to confirm brake light operation
  • Activate turn signals on the repaired side to verify turn signal function
  • Shift transmission into reverse to check reverse light if that bulb was replaced
  • Visually inspect from outside the vehicle to confirm all lights are functioning properly
