Complete transmission fluid exchange procedure for the 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 2.5L I4 using a flush machine or drain-and-fill method to replace all ATF with fresh Toyota WS fluid.
Warnings
⚠Transmission fluid can exceed 200°F during normal operation. Allow vehicle to cool for at least 30 minutes before beginning work.
⚠️Never mix ATF types. Using fluid other than Toyota WS can cause transmission damage and void warranty. Verify fluid specification before purchase.
⚠The U760E/U760F transmission requires precise fluid level setting. Overfilling or underfilling will cause shifting problems and potential damage.
ℹ️This transmission does not have a traditional dipstick. Fluid level must be checked via the overflow plug with transmission at operating temperature (120-140°F).

Parts
- Transmission oil pan gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Transmission drain plug crush washer × 1 — 90471-20008 or equivalent
- Transmission fluid filter (if equipped) × 1 — Use OEM specification - verify if vehicle has serviceable filter
Fluids
- Toyota WS ATF — 10 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Start engine and allow transmission to reach operating temperature (drive vehicle for 10-15 minutes)
- Raise vehicle using floor jack and support securely on jack stands at manufacturer-specified lift points
- Remove engine under covers using 10mm socket to access transmission pan area
- Verify you have correct Toyota WS ATF fluid - accept no substitutes for this transmission
Procedure
- 1Locate and access transmission drain plugPosition drain pan beneath transmission oil pan. Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan. Clean area around drain plug with shop towels to prevent contamination.
- 2Drain transmission fluid via drain plugUsing 10mm socket, carefully loosen the transmission drain plug. Remove plug by hand once loose and allow fluid to drain completely into drain pan. This will drain approximately 3-4 quarts. Inspect drained fluid for metal particles or burnt smell indicating potential transmission issues. Remove and discard old crush washer from drain plug.⚠Fluid may still be hot. Position yourself to avoid contact with draining fluid.
- 3Remove transmission pan for complete serviceUsing 12mm socket, remove transmission pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern to prevent warping. Carefully lower pan as residual fluid (1-2 quarts) will remain. Remove old gasket material from both pan and transmission housing using plastic scraper. Inspect pan for metal debris or excessive clutch material.ℹ️If excessive debris is present, transmission may have internal damage requiring professional diagnosis.
- 4Replace transmission filter if equippedCheck if your specific RAV4 model has a serviceable internal filter. If present, remove filter by pulling straight down or rotating counterclockwise depending on type. Install new filter ensuring it seats fully and O-ring is properly positioned. Note: Some U760 transmission variants use a permanent mesh filter that does not require replacement.
- 5Clean and reinstall transmission panThoroughly clean transmission pan with brake cleaner and shop towels. Ensure magnet (if equipped) is clean and reinstalled in pan. Install new gasket on pan - do not use RTV or additional sealers unless specifically required by Toyota service manual. Align pan carefully and install all bolts hand-tight first.
- 6Torque transmission pan boltsUsing torque wrench, tighten transmission pan bolts to specification in a criss-cross pattern starting from the center and working outward. This ensures even gasket compression and prevents leaks.Torque specPan Bolts16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
- 7Install drain plug with new washerInstall new crush washer on drain plug. Thread drain plug by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque to specification using torque wrench.Torque specTransmission Drain Plug30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 8Refill transmission with fresh Toyota WS ATFLocate transmission fill plug on driver's side of transmission case (requires 24mm socket). Remove fill plug. Using fluid pump and long flexible hose, add approximately 4 quarts of fresh Toyota WS ATF through fill hole. Fluid should begin to overflow from fill hole when adequate level is reached. Reinstall fill plug temporarily.
- 9Perform initial fluid circulationLower vehicle to ground. Start engine and allow to idle. Shift transmission through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) holding each for 3-5 seconds, then return to Park. This circulates new fluid through transmission and torque converter.
- 10Check and set final fluid levelWith engine running and transmission at operating temperature (120-140°F), raise vehicle on jack stands. Remove fill plug - a small steady drip or trickle should occur. If no fluid comes out, add more ATF through fill hole until slight overflow occurs. If excessive fluid pours out, allow to drain until just a trickle remains. This is the correct level.⚠Engine must be running and transmission in Park during level check. Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands.
- 11Final torque and inspectionWith fluid at correct level and still trickling slightly, install and torque fill plug to specification. Wipe all areas clean and inspect for leaks around pan and drain plug.Torque specTransmission Drain Plug30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine under covers using 10mm bolts
- Lower vehicle from jack stands to ground
- Allow engine to idle for 2-3 minutes, then recheck area under vehicle for any fluid leaks
- Record service date and mileage for maintenance tracking
Verification
- Start engine and verify no leaks from transmission pan, drain plug, or fill plug
- Test drive vehicle for at least 10 minutes, verifying smooth shifting through all gears
- Check for proper gear engagement in Reverse, Drive, and manual shift modes
- Verify no slipping, harsh shifts, or delayed engagement
- Recheck fluid level when transmission reaches full operating temperature if any shifting concerns exist
- Monitor transmission performance over next 100 miles for any abnormalities
