This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the output speed sensor on the 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 2.5L I4 FWD automatic transmission, requiring access from underneath the vehicle.
Warnings
⚠Work on a level surface only. Improper jacking can cause vehicle to fall resulting in serious injury or death.
⚠Transmission fluid may be hot if vehicle was recently operated. Allow to cool before beginning work.
ℹ️Some transmission fluid will drain from the sensor mounting location. Have drain pan ready.

Parts
- Output speed sensor × 1 — Use OEM specification
- O-ring seal for speed sensor × 1 — Usually included with sensor
Fluids
- Toyota WS ATF — 1.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow transmission to cool if vehicle was recently driven
- Gather all tools and parts before beginning
- Ensure you have 1-2 quarts of Toyota WS ATF for fluid replacement
Procedure
- 1Raise and secure vehicleLift the front of the vehicle using a floor jack at the designated front jacking point. Secure with jack stands placed under the frame rails on both sides. Ensure the vehicle is stable before working underneath.
- 2Locate the output speed sensorFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the output speed sensor on the driver's side of the transmission case, near the front axle output area. The sensor is a cylindrical component with an electrical connector on top. On the 2.5L FWD RAV4, it is positioned on the lower front section of the transaxle housing.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector and carefully pull it straight off the speed sensor. Do not twist or rock the connector excessively. If the connector is difficult to remove, use a small plastic pry tool to release the locking tab.
- 4Position drain panPlace a drain pan directly below the speed sensor location. Expect approximately 0.5 to 1 quart of ATF to drain when the sensor is removed. Position the pan to catch fluid that will run down the transmission case.
- 5Remove sensor mounting boltUsing a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the output speed sensor to the transmission case. Keep the bolt in a safe location for reinstallation.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 6Extract the sensorCarefully pull the sensor straight out of the transmission case. Expect immediate fluid drainage. Wiggle gently if needed, but do not pry against the transmission case. Once removed, allow fluid to drain completely into the pan.
- 7Inspect and clean mounting areaInspect the sensor bore in the transmission case for debris or metal shavings. Clean the mounting surface with a shop towel. Check the old sensor for damage or excessive metal debris on the magnetic tip, which may indicate internal transmission issues.
- 8Prepare new sensorRemove the new output speed sensor from its packaging. Verify the new O-ring is properly seated in the sensor groove. Lightly coat the O-ring with clean Toyota WS ATF to aid installation and prevent damage during insertion.
- 9Install new sensorCarefully insert the new sensor straight into the transmission case bore, ensuring the O-ring does not roll or pinch. Push the sensor in until it is fully seated against the mounting surface. Align the bolt hole.
- 10Install and torque mounting boltInstall the sensor mounting bolt and hand-tighten. Using a torque wrench, tighten the bolt to 11.0 Nm (8.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this can crack the sensor housing.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the sensor until you hear or feel a distinct click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely locked.
- 12Refill transmission fluidLower the vehicle to the ground. Locate the transmission dipstick tube (if equipped) or fill plug on the driver's side of the transmission. Add approximately 1 to 1.5 quarts of Toyota WS ATF to replace the fluid lost during sensor replacement. Use a funnel and measuring container for accurate filling.
- 13Check fluid levelStart the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. With the engine running and the vehicle on level ground, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D and back to P). Check the fluid level according to the dipstick markings or level plug specification. The fluid should be in the HOT range. Add fluid in small increments if needed.
Reassembly
- Ensure the electrical connector is fully locked onto the sensor
- Verify no fluid leaks are present at the sensor mounting location
- Double-check that the transmission fluid level is correct after the vehicle reaches operating temperature
- Clean up any spilled ATF from underneath the vehicle and dispose of used fluid properly
Verification
- Start the vehicle and verify no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster, particularly the check engine light or transmission warning light
- Allow the vehicle to idle for 2-3 minutes and inspect the sensor area for any fluid leaks
- Take a short test drive (1-2 miles) and verify smooth shifting through all gears
- Use an OBD-II scanner to verify no speed sensor codes are present (P0720, P0722, or similar)
- Re-check transmission fluid level after test drive with engine at operating temperature
- Confirm speedometer and odometer are functioning correctly
