Turn Signal Bulb - Rear

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the rear turn signal bulb on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.5L I4 engine, accessed from inside the rear cargo area.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
2. Allow rear turn signal bulb to cool if recently operated
3. Open rear liftgate for access to cargo area

Procedure

1. 1

   Access the taillight assembly
   From inside the rear cargo area, locate the fabric or carpet access panel on the interior side of the taillight assembly. This panel is on the rear quarter panel trim behind the affected taillight.

   Remove the access cover
   Carefully pull back or remove the fabric access cover. Some models have a small plastic fastener or Velcro; gently pry or pull to release. No tools are typically required for this step.

   Locate the turn signal bulb socket
   Behind the taillight assembly, identify the turn signal bulb socket. The turn signal socket is typically the amber-colored bulb socket, usually positioned in the middle or lower portion of the taillight cluster. Consult your owner's manual diagram if unsure.

   Remove the bulb socket
   Grasp the bulb socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (90 degrees) until it releases from the taillight housing. Pull the socket straight out from the housing.

   Remove the old bulb
   With the socket removed, push the bulb gently into the socket and rotate counterclockwise to release it from the bayonet mount, then pull the bulb straight out. Inspect the socket contacts for corrosion or damage and clean if necessary with electrical contact cleaner.

   Install the new bulb
   Wearing gloves or holding the new bulb by its plastic base only, align the bulb pins with the socket slots. Push the bulb in gently and rotate clockwise until it locks into place. Ensure the bulb is seated firmly and cannot be pulled out without rotating.

   Reinstall the bulb socket
   Insert the bulb socket back into the taillight housing, aligning the tabs with the slots. Push in firmly and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until the socket locks into place. Verify the socket is fully seated and secure.

   Replace the access cover
   Reinstall the fabric or carpet access panel, ensuring any fasteners or Velcro are properly secured. The cover should sit flush with the surrounding trim.

Reassembly

1. Ensure the bulb socket is fully locked into the taillight housing with no gaps
2. Verify the interior access panel is properly secured and does not rattle

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine
• Activate the turn signal on the side where the bulb was replaced and verify the indicator flashes at normal speed on the dashboard
• Have an assistant observe the rear turn signal operation or use a reflective surface to confirm the new bulb illuminates properly
• Test the hazard lights to verify both rear turn signals function correctly
• Confirm no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster indicating a bulb failure
