This procedure covers removing and replacing a single valve spring on the 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 2.5L I4 engine without removing the cylinder head, using a valve spring compressor tool while maintaining cylinder pressure.
Warnings
⚠️Engine must be cold before beginning work. Hot components can cause severe burns.
⚠️Dropping valve keepers, retainers, or allowing the valve to drop into the cylinder will require cylinder head removal. Use extreme care and magnetic tools.
⚠The cylinder for the affected valve must be at TDC on compression stroke with pressure applied to prevent valve drop.
⚠Do not rotate engine while valve spring is removed or valve damage will occur.
ℹ️This procedure assumes the failed spring has not caused valve or piston contact damage. Verify no internal damage exists.

Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on clips
- Label and disconnect any interfering wiring harnesses or hoses from valve cover area
- Take photos of wiring and hose routing for reference during reassembly
- Identify which cylinder and valve requires spring replacement
Procedure
- 1Remove ignition coils and spark plugsDisconnect the four ignition coil connectors. Remove the 10mm bolts securing each coil. Pull coils straight up to remove. Using a 16mm spark plug socket, remove all four spark plugs. Keep them in order for inspection.
- 2Remove valve coverDisconnect PCV hoses and any remaining connections to valve cover. Remove the valve cover bolts in reverse of tightening sequence (work from outside toward center). Carefully lift valve cover off, breaking the gasket seal. Inspect gasket and replace if damaged.Torque specCover Bolts16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
- 3Rotate engine to position affected cylinderUsing a 19mm socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate the engine clockwise (viewed from front) until the affected cylinder is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Both intake and exhaust cam lobes for this cylinder should be pointing away from the valve (rocker arms unloaded). Verify by checking that both valves are closed.
- 4Pressurize the cylinderInsert nylon rope through the spark plug hole until the cylinder is filled and resistance is felt, leaving several inches outside the hole. Alternatively, install a compressed air adapter and apply 80-100 psi regulated air pressure. This pressure prevents the valve from dropping into the cylinder when the spring is removed. Gently try to rotate the crankshaft to confirm the cylinder is pressurized and locked.⚠Adequate cylinder pressure is critical. If using rope, ensure enough is installed to support the valve throughout the procedure.
- 5Remove rocker arm for affected valveConfirm the cam lobe is pointing away from the rocker arm. Remove the rocker arm mounting bolt. Carefully lift the rocker arm and roller away from the valve stem and camshaft. Store in a clean location.Torque specRocker Arm Bolts30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 6Compress and remove valve springPosition the overhead cam valve spring compressor tool on the valve spring retainer. Carefully compress the spring until the valve keepers (collets) are free from the retainer groove. Using a magnetic pick-up tool, carefully remove both valve keepers and set them in a safe location. Slowly release the spring compressor and remove the tool. Remove the valve spring retainer, then the valve spring itself.⚠️Keepers can launch when spring is compressed. Work carefully and keep face away from the tool. Have magnetic tool ready before releasing keeper pressure.
- 7Inspect valve stem seal and valveWith spring removed, inspect the valve stem seal for damage. Check the valve stem for scoring, wear, or damage. If the seal is compromised, remove and replace it using appropriate seal removal and installation tools. Inspect the valve spring retainer for cracks or wear.
- 8Install new valve springInstall the new valve spring over the valve stem, ensuring proper orientation (closer-wound coils toward cylinder head if spring is not equal-pitch). Place the valve spring retainer on top of the spring.
- 9Compress spring and install keepersUsing the valve spring compressor, compress the new spring until the keeper groove on the valve stem is fully exposed. Apply a small amount of grease to the keepers to hold them in place. Carefully install both keepers into the groove using the magnetic tool, ensuring they seat properly in the retainer. Very slowly release the spring compressor while watching that the keepers remain seated. Once spring pressure holds keepers, remove the tool. Tap the valve stem tip lightly with a plastic mallet to ensure keepers are fully seated.⚠Keepers must be fully seated in both the valve stem groove and retainer. Improper seating will cause valve failure.
- 10Reinstall rocker armVerify the cam lobe is still pointing away from the valve. Place the rocker arm back onto the valve stem tip and under the camshaft. Install the rocker arm bolt and tighten to specification. Confirm the roller moves freely on the rocker arm.Torque specRocker Arm Bolts30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 11Remove cylinder pressurizationIf using compressed air, turn off air supply and remove adapter. If using rope, carefully pull rope out through spark plug hole. Slowly rotate the crankshaft two full revolutions by hand to verify proper valve operation and clearance. Watch for any binding or unusual resistance.
- 12Reinstall spark plugs and ignition coilsApply anti-seize compound to spark plug threads. Install all spark plugs and tighten to specification. Install ignition coils into their original positions, secure with bolts, and reconnect electrical connectors.Torque specSpark Plugs - Aluminum Head20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 13Reinstall valve coverClean all gasket surfaces thoroughly. Install new valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals. Position valve cover onto cylinder head. Install valve cover bolts and tighten in the proper sequence (center outward) to specification. Reconnect all PCV hoses and electrical connections.Torque specCover Bolts16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
- 14Perform final checks and start engineReconnect negative battery terminal. Check that all tools are removed from engine bay. Start engine and allow to idle. Listen for any valve train noise or unusual sounds. Check for oil leaks around valve cover. Allow engine to reach operating temperature while monitoring.
Reassembly
- Tighten all fasteners to specified torque values in proper sequence
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
- Verify valve cover gasket is properly seated before installing cover
- Double-check that no tools or parts remain in engine valley or on engine
Verification
- Start engine and verify smooth idle with no valve train noise or ticking
- Rev engine gently to 2500-3000 RPM and listen for abnormal sounds
- Check for oil leaks around valve cover gasket after engine reaches operating temperature
- Perform a short test drive and verify normal engine operation under load
- Re-check valve cover bolt torque after engine has cooled if any seepage is observed
