The 2000 Jetta is a mixed bag: the 1.9L TDI is a workhorse if maintained, but the 1.8T suffers from sludging and coil-pack issues, while the 2.0L is gutless but mechanically simpler. Electrical gremlins and transmission cooling problems plague all variants.
1.8T Engine Sludge and Oil Consumption
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (1qt per 1,000 mi), Check engine light with cam position codes, Rough idle or misfires, Complete engine failure if neglected
Fix: VW 1.8T requires 5,000-mile oil changes with proper 502.00 spec oil or sludge clogs oil pickup and starves bearings. Once sludged, expect full engine teardown or short-block replacement. 20-30 labor hours for rebuild, 12-16 for used engine swap.
Estimated cost: $3,500-6,500
Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission slipping or shuddering, Milky pink fluid in coolant reservoir, Overheating transmission, Limp mode or no forward gears
Fix: Internal cooler in radiator fails, mixing coolant and ATF, destroying clutch packs. Requires radiator replacement, full transmission flush or rebuild, and cooling system flush. If caught early (just cooler), 3-4 hours; if trans is contaminated, add 12-18 hours for rebuild.
Estimated cost: $800-4,000
Ignition Coil Pack Failures (1.8T)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Misfires under load or when wet, CEL with P0300-P0304 codes, Hesitation or stumbling acceleration, Poor fuel economy
Fix: Coil packs crack and arc to block. Replace all four at once with OEM or quality aftermarket, plus spark plugs. 1.5-2 hours labor. Budget for ignition wires if corroded.
Estimated cost: $400-700
Mass Airflow Sensor Contamination
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Stalling at idle or when coming to a stop, Poor throttle response, Black smoke from exhaust, CEL with MAF or fuel trim codes
Fix: Hot-wire MAF gets contaminated from oiled aftermarket air filters or crankcase vapors. Clean with MAF-specific cleaner first (0.3 hours), replace if no improvement (0.8 hours). Don't use carb cleaner—it destroys the sensor.
Estimated cost: $150-400
Window Regulator Failure
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Window drops into door, Grinding or clicking noise when operating window, Window stuck in down position, Slow or uneven window travel
Fix: Plastic regulator guides and cables break. Replace entire regulator assembly per door. 1.5-2.5 hours per door depending on front or rear. Rears are worse. Do both fronts or both rears together—the other side is living on borrowed time.
Estimated cost: $250-450
Brake Light Switch Failures
Common · medium severity
Symptoms: Brake lights not working, Cruise control won't engage, Transmission won't shift out of park, Push-button start won't work (if equipped)
Fix: Switch above brake pedal fails internally or adjustment loosens. Multiple recalls issued but problem persists. Replacement takes 0.5 hours—it's a $20 part but affects safety and driveability. Check it at every service.
Estimated cost: $80-150
Power Door Lock Actuator Failure
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 90,000-160,000 mi
Symptoms: Single door won't lock or unlock with key fob, Buzzing or clicking from door, Door locks cycling on their own, Central locking works but one door lags
Fix: Actuator gears strip. Each door requires door panel removal and actuator replacement. 1.5-2 hours per door. Driver's door most common. Not urgent but annoying and invites theft if driver door affected.
Estimated cost: $200-350
TDI Injection Pump and Injector Issues
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 150,000-250,000 mi
Symptoms: Hard starting when cold, Black smoke and power loss, Metallic knocking at idle, Fuel in oil (dilution)
Fix: ALH TDI injection pumps can fail from dirty fuel or worn cam lobes. Injectors wear and leak. Pump replacement is 6-8 hours; injector set is 4-5 hours. Use only quality diesel fuel and replace fuel filter every 10k miles. If cam is scored, you're into head removal.
Estimated cost: $1,800-3,500
Owner tips
1.8T owners: Use VW 502.00 spec oil and change every 5,000 miles maximum—extended intervals kill these engines
Check transmission cooler lines and radiator for cross-contamination every 30k miles on automatics
TDI longevity depends on fuel quality and 10k-mile fuel filter changes—don't skip them
Replace brake light switch preemptively at 100k miles regardless of function—it's cheap insurance
Coil packs: replace all four at once on 1.8T, not one at a time
Buy the TDI manual if you find one well-maintained; avoid 1.8T automatics unless you see religious oil-change records and can budget for eventual transmission work.

The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
Consequence: A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Remedy: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.
