Camshaft Position Sensor

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 · 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 L83

11.8V6.0V0.1V50ms/div | 5V/divdc-square
Sensor Type
hall-effect
Waveform Type
dc-square
Location
Rear of cylinder head near firewall - Bank 1 (driver side) and Bank 2 (passenger side) each have one sensor reading 4-lobe reluctor on camshaft
Pins
3-pin connector
Idle Frequency
10 Hz
Timebase
50ms/div
Voltage Scale
5V/div
Trigger
6V, rising edge

Wiring

Gray wire (signal), Orange wire (12V reference), Black wire (ground)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.1V to 11.8V
At Higher RPM
0.1V to 11.8V

Expected Pattern

4 square wave pulses per camshaft revolution (8 per crankshaft revolution), clean transitions between 0V and 12V with 50% duty cycle per lobe

Known-Good Waveform

Clean digital square wave switching between approximately 0.2V (low) and 11.5V (high) with sharp rise and fall times under 1 microsecond. At idle, expect 4 pulses per cam revolution with equal on/off times creating precise 50% duty cycle for each lobe detection, frequency doubles proportionally with engine RPM.

Common Failure Patterns

Voltage stuck at 12V or 0V with no switching, completely flat line
Cause: Failed Hall-effect sensor IC, open or shorted signal wire, or loss of 12V reference or ground
Related DTCs: P0340, P0341, P0365, P0366
Slow rise/fall times creating sloped transitions instead of sharp edges, or voltage not reaching full 12V
Cause: Degraded Hall sensor output transistor, excessive resistance in signal circuit, or weak reference voltage supply
Related DTCs: P0341, P0366, P0016
Missing pulses or intermittent signal dropout, irregular pattern
Cause: Worn camshaft reluctor lobes, excessive camshaft endplay, sensor air gap too large, or contamination from oil on sensor face
Related DTCs: P0016, P0017, P0341

Diagnostic Tips

The L83 uses Active Fuel Management (AFM/cylinder deactivation) which relies heavily on precise cam timing correlation; P0016/P0017 codes are often cam sensor related rather than timing chain issues. Always check both bank 1 and bank 2 cam sensors as the AFM system requires both for proper operation.
