Wiring

Tan wire (IAT signal), Black wire (ground) - both part of MAF connector

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
1.5V to 3.5V
At Higher RPM
1.2V to 3V

Expected Pattern

Steady DC voltage inversely proportional to intake air temperature, should track ambient temperature when cold

Known-Good Waveform

At ambient temperature of 70°F, expect 2.5-3.0V. Voltage decreases as intake air warms from engine heat or forced induction heating. Signal should be stable with minimal noise. Under hard acceleration or extended idle, voltage may drop to 1.5-2.5V as air warms.

Common Failure Patterns

Constant 4.9-5.0V reading
Cause: Open circuit in IAT sensor element, broken wire in MAF harness
Related DTCs: P0112, P0113
Reading near 0.1-0.3V constantly
Cause: Short to ground in sensor or wiring
Related DTCs: P0112
Implausible reading compared to ECT at cold start
Cause: Contaminated sensor element from oil vapors or dirt buildup
Related DTCs: P0111

Diagnostic Tips

IAT is integral to the MAF sensor assembly on L83 engines - cannot be replaced separately. If IAT fails, entire MAF must be replaced. Check for correlation with ECT at cold start - both should read within 10°F of each other when cold soaked overnight.
