Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0.8V to 1.5V
At Higher RPM
4.2V to 4.7V
Expected Pattern
DC analog voltage with rhythmic pulsations from intake runner dynamics, 0.9-1.4V at idle, 4.3-4.6V at key-on engine-off
Known-Good Waveform
At key-on engine-off, voltage should read 4.3-4.6V indicating barometric pressure (approximately 100 kPa at sea level). At warm idle in park, voltage drops to 0.9-1.4V indicating 20-35 kPa vacuum with visible rhythmic pulsations of 0.1-0.3V amplitude at half engine speed frequency due to intake pulses. Voltage response should be instantaneous during throttle changes.
Common Failure Patterns
KOEO voltage reads below 4.0V or above 4.8V, idle voltage outside 0.8-1.6V range
Cause: Failed internal piezoresistive element, contaminated sensor diaphragm from oil vapors
No pulsations visible at idle or voltage is completely flat
Cause: Restricted vacuum hose to sensor, plugged sensor port, or internally failed sensor
Diagnostic Tips
L83 uses MAP sensor for barometric pressure reference and engine load calculation in speed-density backup mode. Verify 5V reference voltage is stable as shared circuit affects multiple sensors. Compare MAP voltage to calculated load percentage - at idle should indicate 20-35 kPa. Large vacuum leaks show higher than normal idle MAP voltage but normal KOEO reading.
