Wiring

Yellow (12V ignition feed), Black (ground), Tan (MAF signal to PCM), Purple/White (IAT signal to PCM), Gray (reference ground)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.6V to 1.2V
At Higher RPM
3.5V to 4.8V

Expected Pattern

Smooth analog DC voltage proportional to airflow, 0.6-1.2V at idle increasing smoothly to 3.5-4.8V at WOT

Known-Good Waveform

At idle with engine fully warmed, MAF signal should be stable at 0.7-1.1V with less than 0.05V ripple, corresponding to 3-7 g/s airflow. During throttle snap from idle to 3000 RPM, voltage should rise smoothly without steps or hesitation to 2.5-3.5V, then return smoothly to idle voltage without overshoot or oscillation.

Common Failure Patterns

Voltage stuck at 0.5-0.8V regardless of throttle input or reads abnormally high at idle over 1.5V
Cause: Contaminated hot wire element from oil vapor or dirt, cracked sensor housing causing air bypass
Related DTCs: P0101, P0102, P0103, P0171, P0174
Erratic voltage fluctuations over 0.2V at steady idle or stepped voltage changes
Cause: Deteriorating hot wire element, loose connector pins, or interference from aftermarket intake
Related DTCs: P0101, P0171, P0174
Slow response time over 0.5 seconds during throttle transients
Cause: Contaminated or failing sensing element, exhaust leak causing airflow turbulence
Related DTCs: P0101, P0300

Diagnostic Tips

L83 uses AC Delco hot-film MAF sensor highly sensitive to contamination from oiled aftermarket filters. Verify proper MAF voltage by comparing to calculated airflow: at idle should read 3-7 g/s (0.7-1.1V). Check for intake air leaks downstream of MAF as they cause lean codes without affecting MAF voltage. Do not use MAF cleaner spray on this sensor - replace if contaminated.
