Crankshaft Position Sensor
2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 · 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 L83
Sensor Type
variable-reluctance
Waveform Type
ac-sine
Location
Right rear side of engine block, above the starter motor, reading a 58-tooth reluctor wheel (58X system)
Pins
2-pin connector
Idle Frequency
48 Hz
Timebase
20ms/div
Voltage Scale
5V/div
Trigger
0V, rising edge
Wiring
Purple wire (signal +) and Light Blue wire (signal -), both twisted pair shielded
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
-3.5V to 3.5V
At Higher RPM
-18V to 18V
Expected Pattern
58 teeth per revolution AC sine wave pattern, amplitude increases with RPM, uniform spacing with consistent peak-to-peak voltage
Known-Good Waveform
Clean AC sine wave with 58 evenly-spaced pulses per crankshaft revolution, approximately 3-4V peak-to-peak at idle (600-650 RPM) increasing proportionally with engine speed. Signal should be symmetrical above and below zero volts with no DC offset, showing smooth transitions without noise or dropouts.
Common Failure Patterns
Erratic amplitude variations, inconsistent peak voltages between teeth, or weak signal below 2V at idle
Cause: Sensor air gap too large (should be self-setting but debris or improper installation), worn reluctor wheel teeth, or internal sensor coil degradation
Sudden signal dropout or intermittent loss of waveform, especially when engine is hot
Cause: Failing sensor coil winding with heat-related open circuit, common issue on high-mileage L83 engines over 100k miles
Diagnostic Tips
The L83 58X crank sensor is known for heat-related failures; test with engine fully warmed up. Check for oil leaks from rear main seal contaminating the sensor area. Verify reluctor wheel has no missing or damaged teeth by rotating engine by hand and monitoring waveform consistency.
