2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 · 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 L83
Sensor Type
inductive
Waveform Type
dc-variable
Location
Eight high-impedance injectors mounted in fuel rail, direct injection into combustion chamber on intake side of cylinder head
Pins
2-pin connector
Idle Frequency
16.67 Hz
Timebase
5ms/div
Voltage Scale
20V/div
Trigger
10V, falling edge
Wiring
Red or Pink (12V supply from fuel injector fuse), Brown or specific cylinder control wire (PCM ground driver)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0V to 65V
At Higher RPM
0V to 90V
Expected Pattern
12V baseline, drops to 0V when activated, sharp inductive spike to 50-80V at turn-off, pulse width 1.5-3.5ms at idle
Known-Good Waveform
Clean square wave with 12V supply dropping sharply to near 0V when injector energizes, pulse width of 1.5-3.5ms at idle in closed loop. Turn-off produces sharp inductive spike to 50-80V with 2-4 damped oscillations lasting 0.5-1ms before returning to 12V baseline, indicating proper pintle closure.
Common Failure Patterns
Inductive spike reduced below 40V or absent, slow return to baseline
Cause: Shorted injector windings, failed internal diode, or worn pintle causing slow closure
Pulse width exceeds 8ms at idle or varies more than 20% between injectors
Cause: Clogged injector restricting flow, failed fuel pressure regulator, or weak fuel pump
Diagnostic Tips
L83 uses Bosch EV14 direct injection solenoid injectors operating at 10.5-11 MPa fuel pressure. Compare current ramp during on-time across all cylinders - should reach full current in 0.3-0.5ms. Carbon buildup on injector tips is common; measure pulse width variation between banks as indicator of flow restriction requiring chemical cleaning service.
