Wiring
Pin 1: Various colors by cylinder position (PCM control), Pin 2: Brown or Red (12V Power from fuel injector relay)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
-5V to 65V
At Higher RPM
-5V to 75V
Expected Pattern
Initial voltage spike to 60-70V during injector opening (peak and hold), followed by pulldown to battery voltage during hold phase, then negative spike to -3 to -5V during closing
Known-Good Waveform
Direct injection injector shows initial peak voltage of 60-70V for approximately 0.3ms to rapidly open pintle against high cylinder pressure (2000+ PSI fuel rail pressure), then hold phase at 12-14V for duration of injection event. Pulse width at idle is typically 0.8-1.5ms. Closing induces clean negative spike to -3 to -5V with minimal oscillation.
Common Failure Patterns
Reduced or absent peak voltage, slow rise time, weak negative spike on closing
Cause: Injector driver circuit failure in PCM, high resistance in injector winding or connector, internal injector coil degradation
Diagnostic Tips
EcoBoost DI injectors operate at very high pressure (2200 PSI) and are prone to carbon buildup requiring cleaning or replacement around 100k miles. Compare pulse width and voltage patterns across all cylinders. Monitor fuel rail pressure sensor simultaneously.
