Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0.6V to 0.9V
At Higher RPM
0.1V to 0.9V
Expected Pattern
Relatively flat signal centered around 0.65-0.75V with very slow, lazy transitions (less than 2-3 switches per minute) indicating efficient catalyst oxygen storage
Known-Good Waveform
Post-catalyst sensor should show a relatively stable voltage around 0.6-0.8V with very slow, gradual transitions compared to the upstream sensor. A properly functioning catalyst dampens the rapid switching seen upstream, producing lazy oscillations of 0.1-0.3V at intervals of 10-30 seconds. The signal should never mirror the upstream sensor's quick transitions; if it does, catalyst efficiency is compromised.
Common Failure Patterns
Signal mirrors upstream sensor with rapid switching (more than 10 transitions per minute)
Cause: Failed catalytic converter with insufficient oxygen storage capacity
Voltage stuck at low value (below 0.2V) or high value (above 0.85V) continuously
Cause: Failed downstream O2 sensor or exhaust leak affecting sensor reading
Diagnostic Tips
Compare downstream sensor activity directly to upstream sensor on a dual-trace scope to evaluate catalyst efficiency - downstream should show 70-90% reduction in switching activity. EcoBoost engines with persistent rich codes may carbon-load catalysts prematurely; verify proper turbo oil drain and PCV system function to prevent oil contamination.
