Fuel Injector
2016 Ford F-150 · 5.0L V8 Coyote
Sensor Type
inductive
Waveform Type
pulse-width
Location
Port fuel injectors located in intake manifold runners, one per cylinder (8 total)
Pins
2-pin connector
Idle Frequency
20.8 Hz
Timebase
10ms/div
Voltage Scale
20V/div
Trigger
6V, falling edge
Wiring
Red or Pink (12V power from fuel injector power relay), various colors for PCM ground trigger (Yellow/White, Tan/Orange, Light Blue/Red, etc., cylinder-specific)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0V to 12V
At Higher RPM
0V to 12V
Expected Pattern
Sharp drop from 12V to ground when injector opens, voltage spike to 40-65V when injector closes due to inductive kickback, pulse width varies with load
Known-Good Waveform
Clean square wave showing rapid drop from battery voltage to near 0V during injector on-time, followed by sharp inductive spike to 40-65V when PCM driver turns off. Pulse width at idle typically 2.5-3.5ms. No rounding or hesitation during opening or closing transitions.
Common Failure Patterns
Reduced or absent voltage spike below 30V, slow closing transition
Cause: Shorted injector windings or failing injector coil, resistance out of spec (11-18 ohms)
Excessive voltage spike over 80V or chattering waveform
Cause: Open circuit in injector, high resistance connection, or PCM driver issue
Diagnostic Tips
Coyote 5.0L uses high-impedance injectors (11-18 ohms). Compare pulse width across all cylinders; variance greater than 0.5ms indicates potential injector clogging. Verify fuel pressure at 55-65 PSI before diagnosing injector electrical issues.
