Expected Pattern
Relatively stable voltage centered near 0.7-0.8V with slow, gentle transitions; much less active than upstream sensor due to catalytic converter buffering; switching should be lazy and infrequent
Known-Good Waveform
Narrowband zirconia sensor that produces relatively steady voltage around 0.7-0.8V when catalytic converter is functioning properly. Post-cat sensor should show minimal activity compared to upstream sensor—typically lazy transitions with switching frequency less than 1 Hz. A healthy catalyst dampens exhaust oscillations, so downstream sensor voltage should be stable with only occasional slow movements. Voltage should still be capable of full 0.1-0.9V range during fuel cut or enrichment events, but normal operation shows limited switching.
Common Failure Patterns
Downstream sensor mirrors upstream sensor activity, switching rapidly with similar frequency and amplitude
Cause: Failed or degraded catalytic converter not buffering exhaust pulses; converter has lost efficiency
Voltage stuck below 0.3V or above 0.7V with little to no movement, flat signal
Cause: Failed O2 sensor, sensor contamination, exhaust leak affecting sensor reading, or heater failure preventing sensor from reaching operating temperature
Diagnostic Tips
Compare downstream sensor activity to upstream on a dual-trace scope; downstream should be significantly less active if catalyst is healthy. F-150 5.0L uses close-coupled cats that run very hot; verify sensor heater operation as these sensors rely on heater more than exhaust heat. Check for exhaust leaks at collector flanges which are common failure points on this engine.
