Wiring

Gray or Brown (PCM control, varies by cylinder) and Black (ground return through PCM)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0V to 65V
At Higher RPM
0V to 65V

Expected Pattern

Peak-and-hold waveform: initial voltage spike to 55-65V for 0.3-0.5ms, then hold voltage at 12-14V for remainder of pulse width

Known-Good Waveform

Direct injection injectors show initial current inrush creating voltage spike to 55-65V as PCM applies boosted voltage for rapid pintle opening, followed by hold phase at battery voltage for 0.8-2.5ms at idle. Total pulse width varies 1.0-3.5ms depending on load. Injector should show clean cutoff with small inductive kickback spike of 80-100V when current stops.

Common Failure Patterns

Reduced peak voltage below 50V or absent hold phase
Cause: Weak injector driver circuit in PCM or high resistance in injector harness connector
Extended pulse width beyond 4ms at idle with rough running
Cause: Clogged injector restricting flow or low fuel pressure from high-pressure fuel pump failure
Related DTCs: P0087, P0088, P0300, P030X, P0171, P0174
Erratic pulse width variation between injectors or missing pulses
Cause: PCM injector driver failure or corroded connections at fuel injector clips
Related DTCs: P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206

Diagnostic Tips

EcoBoost uses Bosch direct injection system operating at 2500+ PSI. Monitor injector current ramp rate during peak phase; slow ramp indicates high injector coil resistance from overheating. Compare all 6 injector waveforms as high-pressure pump delivers fuel sequentially and uneven flow indicates pump cam lobe wear.
