Expected Pattern
Relatively steady voltage around 0.6-0.9V with slow, lazy fluctuations due to catalytic converter oxygen storage capacity
Known-Good Waveform
With a healthy catalytic converter, voltage remains relatively stable between 0.6-0.9V with slow, gradual transitions (much slower than upstream sensor). Fluctuations should occur at less than 1 Hz frequency, indicating the catalyst is buffering oxygen content effectively. The signal should not mirror the upstream sensor's activity—if it does, catalyst efficiency is compromised. During fuel cut on deceleration, voltage may drop toward 0.1-0.2V then recover slowly.
Common Failure Patterns
Rapid switching similar to upstream sensor, frequency exceeds 1 Hz, voltage rapidly alternates between 0.1V and 0.9V
Cause: Failed catalytic converter with no oxygen storage capacity, allowing unprocessed exhaust pulses to reach downstream sensor
Voltage stuck at 0.4-0.5V (mid-range) with no activity or minimal movement less than 0.05V
Cause: Failed or degraded O2 sensor element, loss of heater function preventing sensor from reaching operating temperature
Voltage remains low at 0.1-0.3V constantly, minimal fluctuation regardless of engine operation
Cause: Exhaust leak downstream of sensor, sensor contamination from coolant or oil, or sustained lean condition
Diagnostic Tips
Compare upstream and downstream sensor activity simultaneously on dual-channel scope—downstream should show significantly reduced activity if catalyst is functional. On turbocharged EcoBoost engines, verify no turbocharger oil leakage is contaminating sensors; excessive oil consumption is a known issue on some 3.5L EcoBoost engines and will poison both sensors and catalyst.
