Wiring

White wire (heater +12V), Black wire (heater ground), Black/Blue wire (signal), Green wire (signal ground)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.6V to 0.9V
At Higher RPM
0.1V to 0.9V

Expected Pattern

Relatively flat voltage between 0.6-0.8V with slow lazy transitions (if any) in closed loop, much slower response than upstream sensor indicating healthy catalyst buffering

Known-Good Waveform

Post-catalyst narrowband sensor should show stable voltage centered around 0.65-0.75V with minimal activity (less than 0.1V fluctuation) during steady-state cruise. A healthy catalyst dampens upstream switching so this sensor should remain relatively flat. During snap throttle, may see slow voltage drop to 0.3-0.4V then slow recovery over 10-15 seconds. Voltage should NOT mirror upstream sensor activity - this indicates catalyst failure.

Common Failure Patterns

Downstream sensor mirrors upstream sensor activity with frequent switching between 0.1-0.9V at similar frequency
Cause: Catalytic converter efficiency below threshold - catalyst substrate degraded or damaged
Related DTCs: P0420, P2A00
Voltage stuck at 0.4-0.5V (lean) or readings consistently below 0.6V with good upstream sensor
Cause: Exhaust leak between upstream and downstream sensors or downstream sensor failure/aging
Related DTCs: P0140, P0141, P0420
No voltage activity, stuck near 0.45V or shows open circuit (no signal)
Cause: Heater circuit failure preventing sensor from reaching operating temperature or sensor internal failure
Related DTCs: P0140, P0141, P0159

Diagnostic Tips

When diagnosing P0420 catalyst efficiency codes on 1.5T engines, always verify upstream wideband sensor is functioning correctly first. Common false P0420 triggers include exhaust leaks at turbo-to-downpipe gasket and oil-fouled upstream sensor from PCV oil contamination. Perform catalyst monitor drive cycle with scan tool to verify before condemning catalyst.
