Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IAT)
2017 Toyota Camry · 2.5L I4
Sensor Type
thermistor
Waveform Type
dc-variable
Location
Integrated into Mass Air Flow sensor assembly in intake tube between air filter and throttle body
Pins
2-pin connector
Timebase
2s/div for monitoring temperature changes
Voltage Scale
1V/div
Trigger
Not applicable - DC signal
Wiring
Light Green/Black (signal to ECM pin E16) and Brown (sensor ground - shared with MAF)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
1.5V to 3.5V
At Higher RPM
1V to 3V
Expected Pattern
Stable DC voltage inversely proportional to intake air temperature - decreases with increasing temperature
Known-Good Waveform
At ambient temperature of 68°F, expect 2.0-2.5V signal. Under hood heat soak can show 1.0-1.5V (150-180°F). Signal should be stable with minimal fluctuation (less than 0.1V variance). Resistance measures approximately 2.2-2.7k ohms at 68°F and decreases to 300-500 ohms at 176°F.
Common Failure Patterns
Voltage fixed at 5.0V
Cause: Open circuit in IAT portion of MAF sensor, broken wire in harness to ECM
Related DTCs: P0113
Voltage at 0V or below 0.2V
Cause: Short to ground in wiring or internal sensor short
Related DTCs: P0112
Reading consistently higher temperature than ambient (lower voltage)
Cause: Heat transfer from contaminated MAF hot wire element affecting IAT reading, carbon buildup on sensor element
Related DTCs: P0111
Diagnostic Tips
IAT is integrated into the MAF sensor on this vehicle - if IAT fails, entire MAF assembly must be replaced. Verify voltage matches ambient temperature before engine start; excessive deviation indicates sensor or wiring fault.
Always confirm waveform data with your vehicle's OEM service manual before diagnosing.
