ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

2018-2024 Toyota Camry · 3.5L V6

0V0.0V0V10ms/div at 25 MPH, 5ms/div at 50 MPH | 2V/divdc-square
Sensor Type
hall-effect
Waveform Type
dc-square
Location
One at each wheel hub assembly, mounted in the steering knuckle (front) or axle carrier (rear) reading a tone ring on the wheel bearing
Pins
2-pin connector
0
Timebase
10ms/div at 25 MPH, 5ms/div at 50 MPH
Voltage Scale
2V/div
Trigger
2.5V, rising edge

Wiring

Varies by wheel position - typically White/Black and White/Red (LF), White/Blue and White/Green (RF), White/Yellow and Brown (LR), Pink and Light Green (RR)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0V to 0V
At Higher RPM
0.3V to 5V

Expected Pattern

Digital square wave at driving speeds, 48 pulses per wheel revolution, frequency proportional to wheel speed

Known-Good Waveform

Clean digital square wave switching between approximately 0.3V and 4.8-5.0V with crisp transitions. At constant speed, frequency should be consistent with equal pulse width and amplitude. All four sensors should show identical frequency at the same vehicle speed with no wheel slip.

Common Failure Patterns

No signal output, flat line at 0V or 5V
Cause: Failed hall-effect sensor IC, damaged tone ring, or broken wire
Related DTCs: C1223, C1224, C1225, C1226
Erratic signal with missing pulses or amplitude variation
Cause: Damaged or contaminated tone ring, excessive bearing play, or corroded connector
Related DTCs: C1231, C1232, C1233, C1234
Signal present but incorrect frequency compared to other wheels
Cause: Wrong tire size on that wheel, damaged tone ring teeth, or bearing failure
Related DTCs: C1241, C1242, C1243, C1244

Diagnostic Tips

These are active sensors requiring power (typically 5V or 12V from ABS module). Check for battery voltage at sensor connector with key on. Common issue is water intrusion at rear wheel connectors causing corrosion. Sensor air gap is not adjustable - if bearing play exists, replace wheel bearing assembly.
