Vehicle Speed Sensor
2018-2024 Toyota Camry · 3.5L V6
Sensor Type
hall-effect
Waveform Type
pulse-width
Location
Vehicle speed is calculated by the ECM from CAN bus data transmitted by the ABS/VSC module using wheel speed sensor inputs, no dedicated VSS on this vehicle
Pins
Unknown
Timebase
500μs/div for CAN signal analysis
Voltage Scale
2V/div for differential measurement
Trigger
2.5V, either edge
Wiring
Not applicable - speed data transmitted via CAN bus network
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
2.5V to 2.5V
At Higher RPM
2V to 3.5V
Expected Pattern
CAN bus signal at 500 kbps with differential voltage between CAN-H and CAN-L, speed data transmitted in packets
Known-Good Waveform
When monitoring CAN-H and CAN-L at the ECM, expect differential voltage of approximately 2.0-2.5V during communication. CAN-H idles at 2.5V and pulses to 3.5V, CAN-L idles at 2.5V and drops to 1.5V. Vehicle speed data is transmitted as a standardized message every 10-20ms during vehicle operation.
Common Failure Patterns
CAN bus voltage stuck at battery voltage or 0V on both lines
Cause: Short to power or ground in CAN network wiring
No differential signal, both CAN lines at same voltage
Cause: Loss of termination resistor, open circuit in CAN network
Diagnostic Tips
2018-2024 Camry does not use a traditional transmission-mounted VSS. Speed data comes from ABS module via CAN. Check for 60Ω between CAN-H and CAN-L with all modules disconnected to verify termination resistors. If P0500 sets, diagnose ABS wheel speed sensors first before condemning ECM or ABS module.
