Wiring

White/Black (signal), Brown (ground), Orange (12V power supply)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.3V to 4.7V
At Higher RPM
0.2V to 4.8V

Expected Pattern

3 pulses per camshaft revolution (6 pulses per crankshaft revolution) with varying pulse widths for cylinder identification

Known-Good Waveform

Digital square wave with distinct pulse pattern containing 3 pulses of different widths per cam revolution for sync recognition. Voltage switches cleanly between 0.3-0.5V (low) and 4.5-4.8V (high). Pattern timing shifts during VVT-i operation as cam phasing changes relative to crank position, especially noticeable during transitions from idle to 2000 RPM.

Common Failure Patterns

Extended cranking time with P0016 code, cam/crank correlation error visible as timing shift between sensors
Cause: Timing chain stretch (common after 150k miles) or VVT-i oil control valve failure causing improper cam phasing
Related DTCs: P0016, P0017, P000B
Intermittent loss of sync pattern, erratic pulse spacing or missing pulses during VVT actuation
Cause: Cam sensor reluctor wheel movement on camshaft from worn dowel pin or retaining bolt looseness
Related DTCs: P0340, P0365
Weak signal amplitude, voltage not exceeding 3.5V or not dropping below 1.5V
Cause: Sensor air gap too large from improper installation or sensor mounting tab breakage
Related DTCs: P0345

Diagnostic Tips

Compare cam sensor waveform phase relationship to crank sensor during VVT-i actuation; proper advance/retard should show smooth phase changes. A8FXS hybrid transmission requires precise cam/crank sync for engine auto-stop feature; inspect VVT-i oil control valve and oil passages if correlation codes present.
