Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0V to 400V
At Higher RPM
0V to 450V
Expected Pattern
Clean inductive spike of 250-400V on coil turn-off, 3-4ms dwell time at idle
Known-Good Waveform
Primary waveform should show battery voltage during dwell (3-4ms at idle), followed by sharp inductive spike to 250-400V when coil is switched off. Current limiting should be visible as slight voltage drop during dwell if held long enough. Clean return to zero with minimal oscillation.
Common Failure Patterns
Low or absent inductive spike below 200V, extended dwell time
Cause: Weak coil windings, high primary resistance, or failing IGBT in coil driver
Diagnostic Tips
Hybrid Camry runs Atkinson cycle with late intake valve closing; verify coil performance under high cylinder pressure conditions. Check ECM coil driver circuit if multiple coils show identical low spike patterns.
