Clean digital square wave at 5V amplitude with 50% duty cycle. Frequency increases smoothly with vehicle speed with no dropouts. At 60 mph, expect approximately 800-1000 Hz depending on tire size and final drive ratio. The 2018-2024 Camry Hybrid primarily uses calculated speed from ABS sensors transmitted via CAN bus rather than traditional VSS.
Common Failure Patterns
No speed signal or speedometer drops to zero intermittently
Cause: Transmission output speed sensor failure, harness damage near transaxle, or ABS module communication fault on CAN-C bus
Erratic speed readings or fluctuating speedometer
Cause: Failing output speed sensor bearing causing irregular reluctor ring rotation, or corrosion in transmission connector C4

Diagnostic Tips
The Camry Hybrid uses a complex hybrid transaxle (P610) with both MG1 and MG2 motor/generators. VSS is calculated from multiple inputs including ABS sensors and transmission output sensor. Verify CAN-C bus communication between ABS and ECM modules. Check TSB 0094-18 for speedometer calibration issues on 2018-2019 models.
