Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
2.7V to 3.3V
At Higher RPM
2.5V to 3.5V
Expected Pattern
Steady voltage around 3.0V with minimal fluctuation during closed loop, responsive to commanded AFR changes during fuel trim
Known-Good Waveform
Air-fuel ratio sensor maintains steady 2.9-3.2V during stoichiometric operation with very tight control, minimal oscillation. Voltage responds quickly to commanded rich/lean excursions during active fuel trim testing, moving to 2.5V lean and 3.6V rich within 100-200ms. Heater element draws 6-8A during warmup, stabilizing sensor output within 20-30 seconds of engine start.
Common Failure Patterns
Voltage stuck near 3.0V with no response to throttle snap or propane enrichment
Cause: Sensor element contamination from oil consumption or silicone poisoning, common on high-mileage Camry hybrids burning oil
Erratic voltage swings, noise or spikes on waveform, slow response time over 500ms
Cause: Internal pumping cell degradation or connector corrosion at firewall harness pass-through point
Diagnostic Tips
Hybrid engine cycling on/off creates thermal stress on A/F sensor; verify heater circuit operation as cold starts stress element. Use propane enrichment test to verify sensor can respond below 3.0V and snap-throttle to verify movement above 3.0V within 200ms response time.
