Jeep Network Map
Jeep began rolling out CAN around the 2004 model year, with a staggered transition across platforms. Early models (2004-2007) used a dual-bus architecture during the transition, with a legacy serial bus still present for body modules. From 2008 forward, platforms used a two-bus CAN setup: a 500 kb/s powertrain/chassis bus and a separate interior/body bus, with gateway function often integrated into the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) on some platforms. Security Gateway (SGW) appeared around 2018 on newer platforms (JL Wrangler, JT Gladiator, WL Grand Cherokee), requiring dealer-level authentication via FCA's wiTECH for module programming and some functions. Jeep shares fundamental architecture with Chrysler/Dodge/Ram, so topology is often identical within platform families.
Testing values and scope patterns are universal — they live on the main CAN playbook. This page is what's specific to Jeep: the buses, where the terminators live, and what breaks. Tap any era to explore it — network map, testing guide, failure patterns.
2004-2007
Early CAN, dual-bus transition (WK, KJ, KK platforms)
Transitional architecture mixing CAN with a legacy serial data bus. Some models retained the legacy bus for body modules through this period.
| Bus | Speed | Carries | DLC access | Terminators live in |
|---|
| Powertrain CAN | 500 kb/s | PCM, TCM, ABS | DLC pins 6/14 | not independently confirmed |

2008-2017
Dual-bus CAN with TIPM integration (JK, WK2, KK platforms)
TIPM integrates gateway and power distribution on some platforms in this era.
| Bus | Speed | Carries | DLC access | Terminators live in |
|---|
| CAN C (Powertrain CAN) | 500 kb/s | Powertrain and chassis: PCM, TCM, ABS | DLC pins 6/14 | not independently confirmed |
| CAN IHS (Interior CAN) | 125 kb/s | Interior/body: instrument cluster, HVAC, radio | Via gateway | not independently confirmed |
GatewayTIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) integrates gateway and power distribution on JK/JKU Wrangler; some platforms use a separate gateway module

Security Gateway era (JL, JT, WL platforms)
Security Gateway authentication required for module reprogramming and certain bi-directional tests. FCA/Stellantis diagnostic software (wiTECH) required for secure access; aftermarket tool access is limited.

TIPM failure / water intrusion (2007-2016 JK Wrangler, WK2 Grand Cherokee)
Under-hood TIPM is prone to internal failures and water intrusion, causing intermittent network communication loss, no-start, and fuel pump cycling with key off. Documented in TSBs. Verify TIPM power and ground and check connectors for water/corrosion before condemning downstream modules.
Aftermarket radio CAN conflicts (JK Wrangler and other TIPM-equipped models)
Aftermarket radios and harness adapters can load or lock up the interior CAN bus, causing multiple U-codes, cluster blackout, and HVAC/body system loss. Remove the aftermarket radio/adapter and verify the interior CAN bus to confirm.
Wrangler JK harness chafe
Interior CAN wiring on JK/JKU Wranglers (2007-2018) chafes at body/grommet pass-through points, causing intermittent loss of communication with cluster, radio, and HVAC. Inspect harness routing at the chafe points.
The bench — what to test with
Digital multimeter (DVOM) with a true 200-ohm manual range$40 is genuinely enough here; the manual low-ohm range matters more than brand, though a $300+ Fluke earns its keep on intermittents and low-drop ground testing.
A basic DVOM does the most decisive tests — the 60-ohm terminator check, the 2.5 V bias check, and the split-half short hunt — which resolve a large share of CAN faults on their own.
2-channel automotive oscilloscope$70-400 for a capable 2-channel with enough bandwidth for 125-500 kb/s CAN; premium units add decode and UI, not better physics.
The scope is what the DVOM can't do: it shows edge quality, ringing, reflections, and one-line-flat faults that reveal a missing terminator or an unterminated aftermarket stub, and it confirms live traffic vs a dead-but-biased bus.
Back-probe pin set / T-pin lead set$15-40 for a decent set.
Interior CAN IHS is only reachable at module connectors, and non-destructive backprobing lets you measure a live gateway-hidden bus without unpinning terminals or creating the next intermittent.
DLC breakout box / T-harness$30-80; a convenience, not a strict requirement.
Lets you probe pins 6/14 and power/grounds cleanly without stabbing the DLC, and gives a stable point to scope the bus with the tool still connected.
FCA/Stellantis wiTECH (dealer-level) authenticated access pathDealer/subscription cost; SGW-authorized aftermarket paths exist but access is limited.
Required for Security Gateway authentication on 2018+ JL/JT/WL — reprogramming and certain bi-directional tests simply won't run without it; aftermarket tool access past the SGW is limited by design.
Wiring diagram / service info subscription for the exact platformSubscription cost varies; non-negotiable for gateway-hidden buses.
The split-half short hunt and interior-bus backprobe are only reliable when you know the connector pinouts and where the stubs drop — guessing pins poisons the whole procedure.
Scan-tool access
Pre-2004 Jeep vehicles use a legacy serial data bus, not CAN. 2004-2007 models mix CAN with legacy protocols and may require protocol/mode selection on some scan tools. Security Gateway (SGW) was introduced around 2018 on JL Wrangler, JT Gladiator, and WL Grand Cherokee; module reprogramming and certain functions require dealer-level (wiTECH) authentication, and aftermarket tool access is limited. Gateway modules must be awake for access to interior CAN modules.
