Charging System
The battery is the victim; the alternator is a suspect, not a verdict.
A dead battery has three possible killers: the battery itself, the charging system, or a parasitic draw while parked. Each has a five-minute test. Modern computer-controlled alternators complicate things — commanded voltage varies on purpose — so know whether the low reading you see is a failure or a strategy.
What the symptoms mean
The diagnostic order
Work top to bottom — the order is the point. Each step rules out the cheapest, most common causes before anything expensive gets blamed.
- Charge and test the battery FIRST. Diagnosing charging with a bad battery underneath wastes everyone's day.
- Running voltage at the battery: ~13.5-15V typical, but on smart-charge systems verify against commanded voltage on the scan tool before condemning anything.
- Load it: headlights, blower, rear defrost at 2000 rpm. Voltage collapsing under load = weak alternator or belt slip.
- Ripple check: AC voltage across the battery while running, over ~0.1V AC suggests bad diodes.
- Parasitic draw: meter in series (or amp clamp), let modules sleep (up to 45 min on some cars), then pull fuses to isolate the circuit that is drinking. Under ~50 milliamps is normal.

The classic mistakes
- Condemning a smart alternator for "low voltage" the computer commanded on purpose.
- Draw-testing before the modules sleep and chasing a phantom 400 mA that disappears on its own.
- Selling an alternator for a battery with a dead cell — the comeback writes itself.
Pro tip: The aftermarket-accessory rule: if the dead-battery car has an aftermarket radio, alarm, or trailer brake controller, start the draw hunt there. Decades of collective experience are behind that shortcut.
