Fuel System

Pressure, volume, and delivery — in that order.

The fuel system has one job: deliver the right pressure AND volume at every rpm. Pumps fail gradually, regulators fail suddenly, and injectors clog slowly — and all three get blamed for each other constantly. Pressure alone is not a diagnosis: a dying pump can make perfect pressure at idle and starve the engine at load.

What the symptoms mean

Long crank when hot, starts fine cold
Leaking injector or check-valve bleed-down in the pump
Fine at idle, falls on its face under load
Volume problem: weak pump, clogged filter, pinched line
Stalls in corners or on low tank
Pickup/strainer or baffle issue — pump sucking air
Hard start after sitting overnight
Residual pressure loss: pump check valve or leaking injector
Strong fuel smell + rich codes
Stuck regulator or leaking injector flooding a cylinder
Whining from the tank that changes with level
Pump wearing out — test before it strands someone

The diagnostic order

Work top to bottom — the order is the point. Each step rules out the cheapest, most common causes before anything expensive gets blamed.

  1. Pull codes and fuel trims first. Positive trims (+10% and up) mean lean: delivery problem. Negative trims mean rich: regulator, injector, or a sensor lying about airflow.
  2. Static pressure test, key-on engine-off. Compare against THIS vehicle's spec, not a generic chart.
  3. Watch pressure at idle, then snap throttle. It should hold or rise slightly — a drop means the system cannot keep up.
  4. Deadhead/volume test if load symptoms exist: a pump can pass a pressure test and still fail a volume test.
  5. Kill the engine and watch residual pressure for 10 minutes. Fast bleed-down = check valve, regulator, or an injector leaking into a cylinder.
  6. Injector balance test (scan tool or by ear with a stethoscope) before condemning the pump for a single-cylinder miss.
  7. Only now open the electrical side: pump voltage AT THE PUMP under load. A tired ground drops volts and pumps die from undervoltage all the time.

The classic mistakes

  • Replacing the pump because pressure was low without checking the filter and the pump ground first.
  • Trusting a parts-store "pressure in spec" reading taken at idle only.
  • Ignoring fuel trims — they tell you lean vs rich before you touch a wrench.
Pro tip: Fuel trims are the cheapest fuel system test there is. Bank-specific trims that split (one bank rich, one lean) almost never mean fuel delivery — look at intake or exhaust instead.
