Idle Control
Idle is where every small problem shows off.
Idle is the hardest thing an engine does — lowest airflow, least forgiveness. Modern electronic throttles idle by tiny blade movements, so carbon at the blade, a vacuum leak, or a dirty MAF all show up here first. Stalls at stops and surging idles are almost always air-side, not "needs a tune-up".

The diagnostic order
Work top to bottom — the order is the point. Each step rules out the cheapest, most common causes before anything expensive gets blamed.
- Look at idle airflow numbers on the scan tool versus known-good: an engine needing extra commanded airflow to hold idle is compensating for something.
- Clean the throttle body (blade edges especially), then run the relearn — this alone resolves a huge share of idle tickets.
- Smoke test for leaks: intake gaskets, brake booster and its hose, PCV plumbing.
- Check the MAF (see Air/Fuel Metering) — under-reporting airflow starves idle.
- Only after air-side is clean, look at base engine: idle misfire from a tired plug or low compression shakes worst at idle.

The classic mistakes
- Skipping the idle relearn after cleaning or battery disconnect, then chasing the high idle you just caused.
- Adjusting anything mechanical before finding the air leak.
Pro tip: If idle improves when you crack the throttle 50 rpm, the problem lives at minimum airflow: blade carbon or a leak that matters most at idle vacuum. That one observation cuts the suspect list in half.
