Vehicle Speed
One small sensor, a dozen loud symptoms.
Speed signals feed the speedometer, shifting, ABS, cruise, and power steering assist. When a speed sensor drops out, the symptoms look dramatic — erratic shifting, dead cruise, jumping speedometer — but the diagnosis is usually one sensor, its tone ring, or its wiring. On many vehicles the ABS wheel sensors ARE the vehicle speed source.

Work top to bottom — the order is the point. Each step rules out the cheapest, most common causes before anything expensive gets blamed.
- Identify WHICH sensor this platform uses for vehicle speed — output shaft, transfer case, or ABS wheel sensors.
- Graph the signal on the scan tool while driving: dropouts show as instant zeros, not gradual decline.
- Inspect the tone ring through the sensor hole where possible — cracked rings and metal-packed sensor tips mimic sensor failure.
- Check connector and harness at suspension movement points; speed sensor wiring lives a hard life.

The classic mistakes
- Replacing the output-shaft sensor when the platform reads speed from a wheel sensor.
