The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake
- If the battery has any charge, turn the ignition to ON (ACC or II position)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the release button on the side of the shifter and move the lever to N (Neutral)
- If the shifter will not release from Park due to a failed brake-light switch or dead battery, locate the shift-lock override slot
- The override slot is a small rectangular opening covered by a plastic cap, located on the console trim immediately adjacent to the shifter lever (typically on the left or forward side of the shifter base)
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the plastic cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the lever to N
- The vehicle can now be moved or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero 12V power, the ignition and shifter interlock will not function. Use the shift-lock override slot to mechanically release the shifter—this works without any electrical power. Insert a key or screwdriver into the override slot, press down, and shift to N. The override is purely mechanical.
