⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is fully engaged and the wheels are chocked
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the console near the shifter base—look for a small cover or cap on the right side or front edge of the shifter gate
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the small override cap
- Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if you have any battery power) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the battery is completely dead, continue pressing the override while manually pulling the shifter toward Neutral—it may require firm pressure
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the override cap

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the override mechanism is purely mechanical. Press and hold the override release while firmly moving the shifter to Neutral. The shift lock is spring-loaded and does not require electrical power to defeat when using the manual override. You may need to rock the steering wheel slightly if the steering lock is engaged, but the shifter override itself is mechanical.
