The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged
- Turn the ignition key to the 'ON' (II) position if possible, or ensure 12V power is available
- Locate the shift lock release cover—a small rectangular trim piece on the console immediately adjacent to the shifter, typically on the left side near the 'P' position
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or your ignition key to carefully pry off the shift lock release cover
- Insert a small screwdriver, pen, or the key itself into the exposed shift lock override slot
- Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If no power is available, press the override and use firm pressure to move the shifter—the mechanical override bypasses the electronic solenoid

With zero electrical power
The RSX shift lock has a mechanical override that works without electrical power. With zero 12V power, simply remove the shift lock cover, press the override mechanism with a tool, and apply firm pressure to move the shifter to Neutral. The key does not need to be in any position.
