🚨 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale: Emergency Neutral
The 2023 Tonale uses a monostable electronic shifter on the center console that returns to center position after each selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is engaged
- Turn the ignition to ON/RUN position if 12V power is available (do not start the engine)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the small shift lock override slot—look for a small rectangular cover or access point on the lower left side of the shifter base on the console
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the override cover
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral position
- If the hybrid system allows, shift to Neutral; if the system is in a fault state, you may need to release the mechanical park pawl by accessing the transmission directly (requires specialist knowledge)
- Release the parking brake only when ready to move the vehicle
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular override slot typically located on the lower left side of the shifter base, covered by a small cap that can be pried off with a screwdriver or key blade
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function. The shift lock override may not release the transmission from Park electronically. You will likely need to access the transmission park pawl release mechanism under the vehicle or through the center console (requires removing console trim). This is a specialist procedure—recommend professional flatbed towing.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE: The Tonale plug-in hybrid has electronic parking brake and electronic shifter. With no power, these systems are locked. DO NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground—damage to the electric drive unit will occur. Use flatbed towing ONLY. If the 12V battery is dead, jump-start or replace the battery to restore shifter function rather than attempting mechanical overrides.
