The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the small rectangular shift-lock override cap on the left side of the shifter base near the driver's side
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park
- Move the shifter to Neutral
- If the vehicle needs to be steered, turn the ignition to ACC or ON (not START) to unlock the steering column

With completely dead 12V battery, the shift-lock override must be used. The override is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power.
